Tipping Ventus Black 6s Shaft

Recommended Posts

Looking to see if anybody has tipped a 6s shaft to make it play 1" shorter and X-stiff.

My driver swing speed is 112-114MPH and I'm looking to tip a Ventus Black 6s shaft 1" and hopefully gain some control with the shorter driver. I'd rather sacrifice distance (if that is the case) if it means gaining more accuracy.

I'm 5'6 and think I've been playing with drivers that are way too long to begin with and have only ever played standard shafts. I look forward to hearing any input on this from anyone that has experience with this or looking to chime in.

Thank you!

Multiple points...

1) From a high level view - a stiff shaft will never be an X Flex shaft just by tipping it and you cannot make one flex into the next stiffest one just by tipping it. (Even though the Fujikura website says this, it's 100% incorrect and stupid)

2) Tipping a shaft WILL make it stiffer in the tip section especially and slightly overall by a few CPM because you are making the shaft shorter and essentially hard-stepping it.

3) Some people like to tip driver 1" standard as a personal preference to have a more stable tip and shaft feel and pros do this on tour. (Taylormade used to do this for no reason)

4) Specifically for your question - I think that a shorter driver would benefit 99% of golfers and if you are 5'6 I would probably definitely recommend it and if you want a more stable feeling shaft with a stiffer tip PLUS a shorter length at the same time it's probably the way to go.

Thanks for the info! I've read how trimming from the butt-end of an X-stiff shaft, thus playing a shorter X-stiff shaft would even make that FEEL stiffer.

Would you recommend starting off with .5" from the tip first, then going the full 1" if necessary? I think I'll have to hit a few range sessions first gripping down the 1" on the shaft just to check out the feel of that. I would imagine it feels like I'm hitting a 3 wood with an enormous head.

Ya going .5” first would be a good idea

I have all driver shafts tipped .5" before sleeve, including each of Fujikura Ventus and TR shafts.  Also, my favorite Fujikura Fuel Tour Spec "S" was tipped 1".

FYI, tipping a shaft is to improve its "feel", NOT to change its flex.  Fujikura Ventus TR shafts have a tip length of 3", which is for tipping, if that's what you want.

As for length, I am 5'10 and have my Driver playing length at 44.75 or 44.5.  At 5'6, it makes sense that playing a shorter length driver would be to your advantage.  Keep in mind, there is a point of diminishing returns.
