Starting a Workout

I am going to start a workout geared toward golf, and I was wondering how this workout looked. Anyone who can offer some additional information or some exercises to substitute would be greatly appreciated.

I think it is pretty bad personally. Too much emphasis on machines, not enough dumbbells, not enough core work. I would throw in some kind of dynamic stretch in between each set as well. Also, why all the bis and tris, you get enough bi and tri work from the pushes (presses) and pulls (chin/pull ups and rows). This is so bodybuilding influenced.

 

Here is how I would modify the exercises if I had to keep the same routine (this is not how I program my workouts, not even close, only how I would modify the one you are showing):

 

 

Day 1-

Lunges-keep

Machine Press- 2 Arm DB chest press

Lat Pulldown- Assisted Pull ups

Machine Military Press- Standing Alternating DB Shoulder Press

Barbell Curls- Standing Alternating DB curls

Tricep Pulldowns- can keep

Twisting Crunches- Side Planks

 

Day 2-

Ball Squats- regular Bodyweight Squats, no ball

Machine Bench- 1 Arm DB Bench Press

Machine Shoulder- Single Leg Romanian Deadlift

DB Curls- 1 Arm Rows standing on 2 feet

Tricep Kick- Med Ball Squat to Press

Crunch- Plank

Woodchopper- Standing Barbell Anti Rotation (see No More Sit Ups and Crunches- Part 3)

Day 3

Deadlift- Keep

Ball Squat- Push Up

Push Up- Single Leg Squats or reverse Lunges

Seated Rows- Inverted Rows

Arnold Press- 1 Arm Shoulder press Standing on 1 foot

Preacher Curls- Assisted Chin Ups

Twisting Crunch- Anything from the No More Sit Ups and Crunches series

I'm not a professional in this field but I am big on fitness and I train towards my golf game.

 

A good program that creates your core stability like GolfFitPro suggested is a good program to be following. I also believe your basic exercises will help you with your game (Bench press, curls, hammer curls)

 

Like I said, I'm not a personal trainer or anything. But I work out regularly and fitness has helped my overall game improve dramatically

GolfFitPro - I'm just as big a proponent of the golf fitness workouts from TPI as you are, but Tiger doesn't look like Tiger without doing some "bodybuilding" exercises. He's obviously spent a lot of time in the weight room doing some heavy lifts, and a lot of supplements too I bet. I believe it's important to have a balance between your strength exercises and mobility/stability exercises.

I don't refer to exercises by calling them "golf exercises" or "bodybuilding" exercises.

 

I was referring to the programming when I said it was bodybuilding influenced, which relies heavily on machine and isolation exercises because the main goal is to look good.

 

Multi joint, multi planar movements are the best choices and should make up the most of your programming. And yes, balance is the key to any good program. My programs include tissue work, mobility, core stability, activation, dynamic flexibility, power, balance, strength and energy system development (cardio).

 

You can still look great and not do bodybuilding programming.

 

It's not just the workouts though, recovery (nutrition and rest) is just as important, and I'm sure he is pretty diligent about both.

 

I'm sure Tiger goes in the gym sometimes and does some things just so he'll look good, he is a guy after all!
