Cut Blue Golf Ball - Honest Review

In the never ending quest for finding an budget golf ball that performs like a premium ball, I find myself trying different balls from time to time.  I have been playing a Kirkland V3, and while I like most everything about the Kirkland, it has a tendency to spin up if miss-hit and/or in the wind.  I still enjoy playing the Kirkland, but am not above looking for something that performs better.  My local Walmart has the Cut Blue on sale for $19 per dozen, so I figured I would give them a try.  I know this isn't a new ball, but I had never tried them, so I figured there were a lot of people who, like me, had just ignored them.

Before I jump into my review, I'll give you some background on my game.  I am 62 years old and have been playing golf for almost 50 years.  For the last 30 years or so I have maintained a handicap somewhere in the single digits.  I have been as low as a 3 and as high as an 8.  Right now my driver clubhead speed is around 100 MPH.  I generally carry my driver 230 - 250.  Below is my honest evaluation of the Cut Blue after playing several rounds with them.

Based on the box, the balls are a 4 piece construction with a urethane cover.  My understanding is the compression is somewhere around 90, but it does not state the compression on the box.

Appearance

The Cut Blue has a bright white glossy finish.  It actually doesn't look like a urethane ball.  In my opinion, the Cut logo looks a little cheap, but I wouldn't base my decision to play the ball on the logo.  The Cut Blue does have a reasonably good alignment aid, if you are into using a line on the ball for putting.

Feel

Off of the clubface, the Cut Blue feels really good.  It's not too soft and not too hard.  It doesn't feel "clicky", but you can feel the ball contacting the face.  It doesn't feel like a marshmallow, like some of the softer balls do.  My perception is that it feels somewhere in between a ProV1 and a ProV1x.  The Cut Blue feels very similar off of the driver, mid irons, and wedges.  I have a milled faced putter and the Cut Blue feels great off of the putter blade.  I feel like it rolls with good consistency and control.

Spin

I would rate the Cut Blue right about in the middle as far as spin goes.  My equipment is not designed to impart a lot of spin, nor am I a high-spin player, but I seem to get just about the right amount of spin with the Cut Blue.  Wedge shots tend to drop and stop.  I am not getting a lot of backspin, but the ball is also not releasing and rolling forward a lot.  Most of my wedge shots have ended up within a foot or two of the ball mark.  I feel like I have plenty of control on short pitch shots around the green.  The spin seems to be low off of the driver.

Distance

I am getting about 5 additional yards over the Kirkland with my driver and about 1 additional club in distance with each of my irons.  I don't have a trackman so I don't know if this is due to higher ball speed, less spin, or a combination of both.  For me, the Cut Blue plays as long as any premium ball that I have used.

Durability

For me, the durability of the Cut Blue has been good.  As I mentioned earlier, I am not a high spin player and do not have overly aggressive wedges.  Therefore, I have not had any of the covers shred or tear on me.  I have played entire rounds with a single ball and not noticed any significant damage.  In other reviews, this tends to be identified as a weakness of this ball, so your mileage may vary.  All I can say is that in my experience, the Cut Blue has not been any less durable that any other urethane covered ball that i have played.

Conclusion

Overall I am very pleased with the performance of the Cut Blue, and I have put it in the bag as my current gamer.  At $19 per dozen, it has a very good performance to cost ratio for my game.

Glad to see another cut blue fan. I originally tried them 4 or so years ago and the durability was definitely an issue, but it really performed well. I ended up getting a great deal at target and got 6 boxes for like $6 apiece. I also picked up some newer ones and they don't seem to have the durability issues.

I have played the Cut Blue but prefer the Cut Grey.  I know people have blasted Cut for their durability, but I have not had any issues.  I think they are a good value at $20 per dozen and have no issue putting them in play.

I've only played the Cut Red (2 piece) and the Matte Orange (3 piece surlyn) and have enjoyed both. I've been thinking about getting both the blue and the grey to try out. I usually wait for the buy 3 get 1 deal but this is encouraging.

I'll admit that I wasn't expecting it to perform as well as it did for me, but so far so good.
