5 man playoff for 1 qualifying spot!

Oh man.. today there was a qualifier for the Stroke Play Championship just to play in it. ( Which will be played at TPC Scottsdale on the Champions course.

 

However, the qualifier was played at a course called Silverbell which is a muni-course in Tucson AZ.

 

Anyways, the field size was 96 players i believe, and only 16 spots.

 

Well I shot 77 today, in the rain.

 

So did another 4 guys, and we were all tied for 16th place. So off to the first tee, I was instructed to tee off first.

I figured it was my chance to actually throw down a little pressure and just knocked a decent drive out there. However nobody noticed the water and everyone put their teeballs perfect.

 

Sadly I was first to hit with all these bombers out here, and the wind was howling. I was 205 out, and Tried to ease a 5 iron, which went off the back long right with lots of green to work with. The rest of the guys did fairly well, 3 hit the green and one long left.

 

I chipped up and left myself a nasty 10 footer, Missed. And that was my day.

 

one other also bogeyed and we headed off. Sadly, I did not make it but I am glad I had some playoff experience.

Anyone else ever had a large playoff like this?

Right on, to bad it was raining out, I hate grindeing it out in the rain.

 

I've never been in a playoff like that, but I have been in a few "Hores Races" Top 10 qualifiers tee off starting on one and lose the low score each hole till there are only two standing on #9 tee box, low score wins, every time I have been in I usually, make it to 4 or 5 and then either miss a putt or am tied for high score, and have to go into a chip off 70 yards out furthest from the pin is out, one time on the second hole everyone made the same score and we had a 9 man chip off it was intense. I love tournement golf there is nothing better!

my biggest playoff was in an ajga qualifier. I shot a 72 and went into a playoff ith 6 other people for the last spot. everyone piped their drives and every put it on with a 5 or 6 iron . The green was super small and reallly sloped. I was the second closest and everybody else except 1 put their par put in gimmie range. So i hit my 20 footer straigtdown hill with two feet of break, and it was a DIRTY lipout. lbut secured my par and thought i was fine. But of course, after seeing my line, the kid who was 5 inches in front of me drains it and that was it!

A while back I was in a 9 man playoff for two spots at a course called Iron Forge, a qualifier for the Pennsylvania State Mid-Amateur to be held at fabled Merion. I remember it was a very long day. The first play off hole was a par 5. It was unreachable. I pushed my second shot into a fairway bunker about an inch from the deep lip on the side toward the hole. I was about 120 yards out. I open the blade of an 8 iron swung hard trying to hit the ball straight up in the air. I hit it about 40 yards to a spot in the rough that was burnt out and a downhill lie. And the lie was horrid, grass in chunks (there was a drought) and my ball was sitting down. I had to make par. The green was about 15 feet below the level I was on. Hit the 60 perfect with a cut. I guess even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes. The ball lands 6 feet from the hole; I make par. Only three of us made par and one birdie.

 

Now I am one of three playing a long par 4 for one spot. One guy three puts (bogie), and the other misses the green and bogies. I made a nice up and down from the greenside rough for a par. I was going to Merion. It was dark when we made it back to the clubhouse. I teed off that morning at about 8:00.

 

One of the most exciting golf experiences I have ever had.

 

P.S. I played like a dog at Merion and missed the cut.

1st flight club champpionship two years ago. Shot 77 - 78 and missed a 2 foot par putt on the last hole to force me into a playoff. The guy I am playing off against is a BOMBER and we are playing a 440 yard par 4 for the playoff. I pipe my drive and have 170 left. He kills it and has 140 left. With the pin cut all the way in the back I thought I needed one more club, but I was in my 1st playoff and didn't consider adrenaline. So I took 6i and airmailed the green, short sided, and a scruffy lie. He puts his on the green about 40 feet away.

 

I play first. Hit the crispest best chip/pitch of my life kind of a half lob/mid trajectory runner and it goes to a foot.....I make my par. He three jacks. I've got my first tournament win. Something I will never forget.
