Beginner Needs Help!

Recommended Posts

Well i had the worse driving range session ever. I felt very inconsistent. I went to the range last monday and i did fine but for some reason today felt different. I had a friend of mine take video of me swinging. IF you watch this video... Swing #5 looks like a good swing but the rest of the swings need work... Any recommendations... I need to go back to the basics again and focus on posture, takeaway, wrist hinge, backswing, etc etc... All comments greatly appreciated. Thanks

I would have someone look at your grip the club seems to be moving around to much. I think one big item to work on is your spine angle, you lose it through the swing. You need to bend over just a little bit more you are almost standing up. If you bend from your hips you should feel the club under you more. Stay in the spine angle till after the ball is long gone. You will start feeling more consistancy.

first imo you're standing too close to the ball at address this causes several things to happen

One it makes you fan the club in your backswing

Your getting so upright going back and no place to turn to so you loose your spine angle or straighten up

Then to try and recover and go down after it.

First key is always address and posture take a good athletic position you are standing to straight up and close at address .

If you are not seeing a good teaching pro I suggest it you have great potential.

Thanks you guys. I really appreciate the comments. Now that I look at it, my posture was kind of whack. But i think also too i was getting a bit wristy in my take-away? In regards to the grip. I went to the driving range today to redeem myself and it seems that there is a lot of movement. i'm starting to form calluses in my glove hand right now below the middle finger and my ring finger. does that mean i need to get a better grip?

its real hard to sit here and say usually if you are loosing the grip you are gripping it too tight.

Clarification

Take a golf club and make your grip with your left hand hold it as tight as you can and see how long it is before you relax

Do the same with a firm but not tight pressure on the left hand bet you can hold it a lot longer

now picture if it was moving.

Your wrists are breaking too early. I was doing that a few weeks ago. I think it is a power leak.

You're rushing the backswing.

Your body sways too much and your spine angle is not maintained, thus the fat shot.

The biggest thing to me:

Your tempo changes from one shot to the next. Try to use the same tempo.

You are much too close to the ball in the 1st move and have not got enough spine tilt at address.....you are then fanning the club too open in the 1st move back and are straightening the right leg a touch you are the having to lift the club too the top of the swing with your arms as you straighten your spine and get out of synch with your arms too steep....you arte making a rotary move through the ball but due to the oprning of the club and it getting do far behind your rear you have got it attacking from the wrong angles hence the reason you hit flat pull hooks with the club attacking from too steep and angle for the rotation.

get yourself stood between 1.5 and 2 knuckes from the ball judging it on the knuckles from the left thigh to the butt of the club and feel that you have got your butt up to the sky more and yout hamstrings will feel a little starined just soften the knees slightly to get the perfect posture.........Get everything to move away together in the 1st move and retain the angle in your left wrist as you start to turn the body away from the ball (i have an iron with eyes I have drawn on with a sharpie pen) you can use this idea to keep the eyes looking at the ball as you move away as a unit.....once you reach 8 o'clock with everything together as a unit you can then rotate the left arm hard across yourself to be in a deeper more synchronised top of the backswing position.....from here you can turn and let it all go and provided you hold onto the angles you have created rid yourself of the low pull hook.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Dan

One shot pulled, one shot low and right. I feel your pain. I've tried a few things - keep your spine angle , brace your right knee (ouch) etc. Not easy to do. The following suggestion is not going fix your swing or make you a "player". But, as a beginner - you need to feel some pop. From the top of your swing - swing with your left hand. You will still pull the ball. But, no more weak shots to the right. Your other shots will be straight. If you have the money for lessons, getting fitted and buying better clubs - disregard what I said. But, to see some improvement in the next few weeks- try my suggestion for 2-3 rounds.

Some more great advice from dfw (and ken :clapping:. You stand up at the top of your backswing because you finish turning your shoulders prematurely (which isn't necessarily bad just might be as far as your flexibility can take you) but your arms continue back which will pull you out of your initial axis (spine) angle. Following what dfw recommended should fix that problem without you having to consciously try and not pull up during your swing.

here is a list of things i will be working on during my driving range session...

1. ball position and trying to stand so close to the ball.

2. bend over a bit more.

3. work on my spine angle.

4. slow down my tempo during the backswing.

5. smooth my takeaway

should i work on anything else or should i just focus on those items right now?
