Lofts in Hybrids, Woods, and Irons

I was looking at some hybrids today. I picked up a 3-strong Nickent 3DX at 18.5* to replace a 2 iron/5wood. If I want to replace my 3-iron, (MP-57/210yards) what loft to I choose?

In general, a 3 iron loft is 21 degrees. But....all hybrids are different and will have different launch angles and different distances because of that. For instance, when I was looking for a 3 iron replacement, I tried all sorts of lofts and manufacturers. And a 19 degree in one would go the same distance as a 22 degree in another. I would recommend figuring out the distance of your 18.5* and your 4 iron, then finding the appropriate hybrid to fill the gap.

A lot of the distance differences that we see in the same loft of club is the length of the club. Make sure you take that in to consideration when you are looking.

Obviously, that gets a little tough. Best way is to see if your local golf course has demo clubs available to hit on the golf course....that's what I did. Another option that I've done before is golfclubdemo.com. Golf Galaxy partnered with them to offer demo clubs that are shipped right to your house for 3-4 days or so. It costs you money to do that, but if you buy the club from Golf Galaxy, they give you a credit on your purchase for what you spent on the demo (if that makes sense). I think there are other sites out there that offer this service as well, I'm just not sure what they are.

 

Make sure you try them out on the golf course with the ball you use, the conditions you play, etc. It will make your purchase much more accurate. But, if you're just out to have fun and really aren't that serious, just smack some balls in a simulator at your local Golf Galaxy/Golfsmith.
