I was watching this video and was wondering if what Gary Player said about keeping the shaft under the left arm at the top has any merit. Does this move keep the arms moving closer to the body on the way down?

That's a very good analysis by Player. Slicefixer is always preaching about how the left thumb needs to be under the shaft (supporting the shaft) at the top of the backswing. A slight cup of the left wrist helps to accomplish this. This support is important in properly setting the club at the top/staying synchronized to be able to let it all go with everything you've got on the downswing. Tiger's takeaway back then was less "one - piece" than it's been over the last 9 months and therefore more disconnected. When you get the left elbow out away from the body and fan the face of the club open early, it flattens the shaft too much, too early in the backswing.

HoganFan,

Then is this Haney move?

I believe the Player analysis is from 2001.

Somewhat related...I was perusing through some old golf books and thumbed through the 2001 "Golf My Way" by Tiger. It has a LOT of stop-action photos of his swings from '96, '99, and 2001. The 2001 driver swing was and still is, upon reflection, probably his best long-club swing to date. I love some of the new changes with his short irons (man did he hit some great wedges at Augusta...too bad about the putting woes), but if you look at these photos from 2001 it's a little annoying some of the changes he has gone to...especially the hooks and flips. His driver swing from the 2001 pics was in a lot of ways just awesome...even though he said he was "shaking hands" with target after impact, the pictures reveal that this was a "feeling" and not reality. Truthfully, his release was pretty far "left" compared to now with the driver and a lot more connected than I realized...his body and hips were very open at impact (50 degrees) and the shoulders too (30 degrees), with the right elbow tucked nicely at the right hip and no "humping the goat" arching of the back. Looking back at the photos, if Tiger could have just reduced his slight lateral slide on the back swing, kept his arms "in-synch" with his turn and torso, and cupped the wrist slightly...man that was probably the whole ticket right there. I guess it's a lesson for us all, sometimes it's a journey with a lot of detours. Could be he'll come back to those positions eventually, but in the meantime it will still be fun seeing him rescue pars from the DMZ!

Cheers,

Tim

TEconner - I was looking at the same book a few days ago and he was so far down the line with his hands in the fold out driver sequence from 2001 that you could probably fit a basketball in the gap.. he actually comes a lot closer to swinging left now.. at least he's not trying to do that ridiculous matching the plane Haney follow through move with the hands that you saw him doing a couple of years ago.... that was painful to watch..

In the video Player demos the takeaway being left arm in, sort of pulling the left shoulder down and away from the target. When I practice this move, it seems to shut the face going back. How/when do you get/apply the proper rotation of the arms to open the face on the way back?
