Does his method really work?

I've seen a lot of stuff about Mike Austin, the guy who became famous for cranking a 515 yard drive. However, it seems as if this man hit long drives all the time, and his methods are used by some professional long drivers today. Are any of you guys using his method? Do any of you know more about it, and what sets it apart from other methods? I mean, could Mike really hit the ball as long as he could simply due to his strenght, or a technically superior golf swing? Thanks in advance.

Austin hit is ridiculously long because of superior technique and superior strength. Hogan specifically requested to play with Austin during practice rounds at Riviera after the accident during the time Follow The Sun was filmed and while prepping for his comeback at the LA Open. He did this for three reasons:

 

1) Austin hit it the longest of anyone around at that time.

2) Austin longballed it with a fade which was the opposite of everyone else who bombed it at that time. The rest bombed it with a draw. Austin's technique was different and Hogan wanted to see it up close and understand it. Hogan was a sponge for knowledge about technique. He watched everyone who had something special going on very very closely and Austin had something very special.

3) Hogan was enamoured with Holywood and Austin was connected with people there.

It worked for him, would I pay for it probably not. I'm finding out alot of this swing info. for money seems to just take my money..lol...Lessons and alot of practice and golf has helped my game the most.

I have watched a lot of Mike Austin video, and I hate the way instructers present his swing, but I really like the action, and I think it is quite similar to Hogan's. Although the angles are different because of obvious differences in size.

I know you posted this a while ago but thought I'd throw my opinion in anyway. I have tried many "methods" over my 5 year golfing career, including lessons from a top 10 instructor at $200 an hour. Although he has a great reputation and can help PGA pros, he didn't help me that much. I've also tried the Hardy One Plane, Two Plane swings with not so impressive results. Out of desperation, I bought the Mike Austin DVD as taught by Mike Dunaway. I used to shoot low 90's normally, but soon broke 80 after one season of using this swing. When I get it right, my drives CARRY 280+ and go straight (with a fade). Irons fly high with lots of spin. The best part of this swing is that it doesn't hurt my back or wrists. Mike Austin had a way of explaining the swing that just made sense to me. He didn't try to baffle with bull s#@. I would highly recommend this swing to anyone looking for an understandable, repeatable, POWERFUL action. If you are a low handicapper, work on your short game! Lol. I still have a long way to go and wish I could find an instructor who teaches this method (one of the drawbacks) but the DVD's are pretty good. Good luck.
