A lot of them are based on (1) whether you are a member (2) your tounament results (3) your ranking.

Every single player in the tournaments is a +3(ish) to 2 handicap, and they all can go low on any given day.

The playing membership in the US is like $200, i think.

Some other ways to get in events that are near you are first place and runner up finishes in big tounaments in your area (those tournaments usually have what the benefits of winning are on the application, and an AJGA exemption might be listed.

If you are young, I would wait until you get more experience in local tournaments and then try it when you are a sophomore-junior.

If that handicap is still a 9, then you pobably will want to work on that as well.

Hope this helps.

yeah no offence but a 9.0 handicap just wont cut it you would be better off playing in local tournaments and getting better there

Ohh, I know I wasn't even considering playing in them now, but I was just wondering how to get started if I was. I know I don't have the game anywhere close to compete.

yeah i tried my first qualifier this year and shot 74 and tied for 10th out of 81 kids, i qualified for the tourney and didn't play that well but i chalked it up to no experience in the ajga. it can be intimidating to start out but i think i'll get used to it. All i did to get in was to get a membership and sign up for the qualifier in the player center.

It definitely can be intimidating to start. I am willing to bet you played better than I did in my 1st event (now 13 years ago). I shot a nice little 49 without a par on my opening 9- and I had to birdie 9 to break 50. Fortunately I was able to play better on the back to finish with an 83 (49-34). I played better the second day, but it still was not very good. After that tournament I felt much more comfortable and had some pretty decent finishes. Good luck in the future.

I think a great way for you to start out is to just play qualifiers if you are not used the traveling and three straight days of tournament golf. All you have to do to earn a performance star is to place in the top fifty percent in the qualifier and top ten gets you an exemption. Once you have become familiar with the environment, then start getting into the three day tournaments, which will be easier once you have some performance stars as well.

Sign up for a membership, if you are a rising senior you will start with 2 performance stars (4 equal 1 exemption), if you are any other class then you will start with one. Sign up for a qualifier or two, go shoot something around even par (2 over normally will get the last spot unless it's a really tough track), qualify for the event that week, if you play well you will get an exemption or two, possibly some stars. Then sign up for another event, and hopefully you have enough stars/exemptions to get into the event with out qualifying - then the process starts all over again.

Thanks for that. I should have known money would get you somewhere in the AJGA.
