Why do pro's mark their balls?

The real question should be, why doesn't everyone play by the USGA (& R&A) rules and mark their ball?

Neither the USGA nor the R&A require that a ball be marked. It is a recommendation, not a rule.

If your golf ball is not marked, how can you positively identify it?

I know my golf balls like they are my children. I can identify them from the location of the cart-path markings, no need to mark them with a sharpie. Again, it is not a rule and I have never marked my ball with a sharpie and never will.

I hope you never play in a tournament with Lori from BB9 in your group. :clapping:

I carry several brands of golf balls in my bag at any given time, and I really don't pay much attention to which brand I pull out to use. A few years ago, I received a "Check-Go" ball spinner as a gift, and I use the black marker provided with it to mark a faint line around the circumference of the "heavy-equator" of the ball. Using a blue Sharpie and one of those golf ball straight line marking tools, I make two 3/8" to 1/2" long lines (about 1/16" thick) end-to-end on the same faint black line. So when I am looking for my ball, I do not have to remember brands or ball numbers. All I tell my buddies is to look for a ball with two blue lines. It's easy to remember, easy to identify and there is never an argument about whether it is my ball which has been found.

You're probably an a-hole...

I hit 12 fairways a round, no need to mark your ball when you are the only one in the fairway all day...no doubt about the ball when it is down the middle.

Didn't mean for this question to go off track. My original question was why did they mark the ball. Only asking because in the tourneys I watch on t.v., there are tons of spotters. They have little flags. There is also only 2-3 people in the group, all probably playing different balls. So marking the ball for identification purposes seemed silly to me. Odds are that they are hitting it when they can find it 90% of the time, they are pro's. And if they don't, usaully someone else is there to find it for them. But I didn't realize you had to have some sort of marking, now I know.

I mark any ball use with the letters J X in red under the numbers. As a clergy person it give me an opportunity to explain what it means. If the person wants talks about it Italk with them about it. If they dont ask I dont tell. I have play with may clergy and non-clergy over the last 30 years and never seen that marking. I have even had a golf course which I play regularly hand me some of my lost balls a number of times, because my mark was so unique.
