Is there a noticeable difference?

Can the body/brain really feel the difference b/w a 65g and a 85g shaft weight?
I hit 5 different drivers with stiff shafts ranging in weight from 65g to 85g. And, to be honest, I did not really feel any real distinct and/or noticeable difference in how they all felt.
Does having a one weight over another really make a huge difference?

Shaft weights can be felt easily in a side by side comparison. Not so much when actually playing due to the lack of choices allowed in your bag. I think of shaft weight as a way of helping you manage the tempo of your swing.

I, as an example, don't swing a light weight shaft in a driver (<70 grams) very well. I am too quick with my wrists and don't always deliver the club to the impact zone in the same place every time. A heavy shaft helps me tone down the tempo enough to allow me to maximize my potential in that zone. I am much more repeatable.

My distance has increased due to the extra mass involved in the whole club.

Picking the right shaft for you will have to involve tip stiffness and torque values that compliment the time it takes you to swing from the transition at the top to impact. You can find the right values in any weight of shaft now a days, but it will take some experimenting to find the perfect one.

The reason shafts are made in different weights is because there are feel and performance differences.

 

Often golfers have difficulty feeling different shaft weights if the clubs have a variety of other mis-matched club specifications, or if all of the tested clubs were not a good fit for the golfer, regardless of the shaft weights.

 

There is most certainly an optimal shaft weight for every golfer that walks this planet.
