Is Bounce on Wedge causing shanks?

I recently purchased a Vokey Spin Milled Wedge- 58 degree with 8* bounce.

My previous wedge was Cleveland 588. 56 and 60 degree- no idea on bounce.

I love the Vokey with a full swing, but for some reason I cannot chip or hit out of sand with this wedge. No matter what I do a continue to hit awful shanks on chip shots. I never did this with the Clevelands.

Could amount of bounce promote shanks or influence how I hit out of sand??

Thanks

No, it shouldn't. A shank is caused by hitting off the hosel.. aka hosel rocket. You could be taking it back too far on the inside and thn throwing the hosel right into the ball.

The bounce shouldn't contribute to that. In fact, that's a rather lower bounce. If anything, a club with too much bounce with skip off a HARD tight lie and cause you to hit a skull. But not a shank, especially out of the sand.

lie angle or length of club could in theory, but not bounce. if the iron is shorter than your previous wedge in theory it brings you closer to the body and could affect a shank. Lie angle if too flat could as well slightly affect.

I honestly think it is just your swing. All my shank moments have nothing to do with bounce etc just getting too close to the body and too out to in. This is more likely to happen with a shorter club as you are naturally more bent over and closer, so dont worry about the new wedges, just work on the swing.

Now I have heard every excuse for shanks. Bottom line: shanks are caused by moving closer to the ball than you were at address. Turn through the shot don't slide forward.

That's because shanks are caused by about 20 different moves. You know that. Nobody in a forum should diagnose someone's shanks without seeing their swing. (I know you didn't try to fix him)

**Standing closer, obviously... but to the contrary I've seen folks shank because the were standing too far away from the ball and lunging at it to reach the ball, and hoselling it quite regularly. Put that person 2 inches closer and they don't reach/lunge and they were fixed.

**Inside out swing path (as golfware mentioned)

**Over the top

There are dozens of moves that will get the hosel closer to the ball. Mine is never standing too close. Mine is taking the club on an inside path and flipping at it. What ALWAY fixes me is the "swing thought" of finishing my swing lower to the ground. Keeping that wedge low to the ground for the 8-10 inches post impact. It's an anti-flip move.

Can't say it will work for you. Good Luck!

I feel the OP's pain. I have one 60* wedge (out of three) that I routinely hit off of the hosel. No matter how I swing the club the shanks eventually appear, and I am a low single digit handicap! First time this happened for my was exactly like the movie Tin Cup as I was at the driving range practicing. The first 2 I hit we all chuckled but then after 4 or 5 I was white as a ghost and scared to golf.

It's weird that no matter what I do with my other wedges with regards to set up, swing, etc. I can't replicate the shank. While I guess that could be considered a good thing I would really like to use the wedge that is giving me the problems.

With some investigating it looks like my problem may be that the wedge giving me troubles has a lie angle that is flatter than my other clubs causing the toe to dig in first.

Good Luck Signed, I Hate the Shanks

I will tell you that I have ocassional problems shanking chips, especially with the ball slightly above me feet. And have struggled with them of full shots too, mostly in the short irons. There is a great thread over in the fitness section that talks about the "forward hip thrust". I saw the videos of it on the Titleist Fitness web site, and that was me exactly. With the shorter clubs, I tend to want to "sit" down in my stance too much, and this puts my weight on my heels too much, also, I was standing too far from the ball, they are all interrelated. Then when I swing, my body wants to center itself, so I move my hips towards the ball, end result, hosel rocket.

I worked at the range 1) moving CLOSER to the ball, and 2) practicing with almost with all my weight on the balls of my feet. Amazingly, I started hitting the ball off the toe. I then worked on moving my weight more towards the center, and started hitting things dead center on the club face. But I still fall back into old habits, and have to work on this constantly.
