Re-painting an old Ping Eye wooden wood!?

Recommended Posts

Anyone had success doing it?
Trying to help my father-in-law by refinishing his Ping woods,(Ping no longer refinish wooden woods) I need help! I sanded them to the wood and now after five coats of black spray paint (a little sanding between each coat), I still see the natural lines in the wood. Did I make something wrong? Or do I have to apply more coats?

Thanks

Sanding sealer to start would've had you done after 2 coats, but...since you're way past that:

You've got a lot of paint on there, so you should be able to get down to a smooth finish without sanding to expose the wood again. Sand with some very fine sandpaper (like 400-600 grit), going deeper with it than you have so far. The gloss black paint should look matte grey where you sand it, and if you quickly wipe the dust away with a damp rag, you should see the remaining wood grain grooves as black lines against the matte grey. Keep sanding carefully, until those black lines disappear, whilst hopefully not exposing any wood, and you should be good. Wipe down with the damp rag, let dry, and apply a couple more coats of paint. If you accidentally expose the wood in any one spot, stop there and try again after a couple more coats.

BTW...black? Weren't those originally a blond finish? Wouldn't that look sweeter? Or am I thinking of Zing woods or so?

Two issues. One you and others may agree with. The 2nd, many may not.

1. The wood needed to be sealed or it will just keep absorbing paint. The 1st step after sanding should have been sealing.

2. Now the tricky and debatable point. After the above step, paint with flat (and I did say flat) paint. The final gloss does not come from using gloss paint. It comes from a poly dip/spray. Even gloss paint that is poly dipped/sprayed will not be as "shiny" as flat paint that is poly dipped/sprayed. Gloss paint will show more blemishes. It has to do with light absorbtion and light refraction.

Want to do it right?

1. Sand

2. Seal

3. 1st paint

4. 1st poly

5. 1st Steel wool, 000 very lightly

6. 2nd paint

7. 2nd poly

8. 2nd Steel wool 000 lightly

9. 3rd poly

10. Hold in sun, twist about looking for imperfections. Repeat 8 and 9 if needed.

11. Glanz wax..added for those that know.....LOL

In may cases one could lightly sand a club down as it make it dull, do not "cut" the poly or paint, then poly dip/spray and it will look as good as what most that "refinish" clubs can do.

In the case of black clubs if one sanded it to a dull/flat finish then touch up missing paint areas with flat (yes flat again) paint, brushed (fine hair poster or artist brush) on, then poly dip/spray it, it will look better then most that "refinish" clubs can do.

Side note. Over the years, I have refinished hundereds if not thousands of black, wooden wood clubs. Your also not a perfectionist unless you had to go back a few steps a few times no matter how many you have done..........LOL

PS

I am retired. I sleep late, play golf, drink, eat, repeat. I do not solicit nor want any more club work.
