Swinging way from the inside, see root cause?

Recommended Posts

This winter I’ve changed my swing to get rid of my OTT move and out to in path, and I’m swinging much much better. Looks better too. But on my longer clubs I’m coming very far from the inside. With driver it’s often 5-7°, and I subconsciously hold the face open and don’t release to avoid the hook. Any idea where this is stemming from? Thanks. https://imgur.com/gallery/rcuXrzH

Good idea, will do. Though this was 8 iron and was still 5° inside

Maybe post a driver swing then? Cause doesnt look too much into out here.

https://imgur.com/gallery/g96DjsK Here is an average one, still 6°+ inside. Shoulders still look flat, that’s a tough move for me with the longer clubs.

You're managing a very common steepening move in transition and not compensating for it correctly which is causing the path issues:

Using Aberg as a comparison given similar build and some aesthetic swing similarities. First things first, way too long of a swing with an 8-iron. That fact it's slightly longer than Aberg's driver swing is red flag #1, but also it's the steepening move at the top where the plane of the club goes from flatter/laid off to down the target line at the very end. We need to come up with a name for this move because I could retire if I had a nickel for every time I tried to describe it. If I had to guess looking at your hands going back it's because you have very poor right wrist set and the disconnecting of your right arm/elbow from your body and steepening of the club at the top is making up for that. It's all bad though, here is a point of reference:

Aberg's short iron swing here for comparison, this is basically the length of 98% of tour player's short iron backswing, and the other 2% are people you'd never want to copy. Normally I don't say "swing like this player", but in this case I am, because while a flying right elbow and an overswing can be compensated for, you don't:

CTjuniorVAberg2.gif.0a28f2854ecb27a6c888bc403fb9252b.gif

Marking the clubface and right elbow we see that you leave that flying right elbow behind you which immediately causes the club to come down steep. Ideally that arm/elbow is more connected to the body anyway, but when isn't (in the case of Aberg here) it needs to come *flying* back in front of you like we see with Ludvig. Tucking it into the right side and keeping the right forearm more vertical is the key getting the club into a shallower position in the downswing to be delivered with power, and you're doing the opposite of both those things:

Here is the same left arm parallel position going back and coming down, and you can see how stuck your right arm is. It steepens the club vs. shallowing like we see with Aberg, and it forces compensations coming down which in your case creates an undesirably inside path. So to recap:

1) More and earlier right wrist hinge to get that hand loaded
2) Use #1 to shorten your backswing and resist letting your elbow fly up and send the club steepening at the top
3) Get your right elbow working down into your side first thing from the top

Without the speed/power from the right hand that #1 allows you to create, #3 will likely cause you to deliver a weak, open clubface so keep an eye out for that.

Man this is so good thank you. Bookmarking to come back to this later when I have more time

With wrist hinge do you mean vertical? And sounds like a tour striker smart ball would be good for me for 2&3?

Correct. Your previous issues with shanking chips is related to this as well, my reply to that thread had "failing to properly hinge and set your wrists which continues to allow the club to get flat and inside going back" and that is still relevant.

Ah that makes sense. I have a smart ball and really like it, makes my swing feel so short which I guess I need. Need to look up some wrist drills now.

For the wrists: stand at address then c0ck the wrists so the club comes straight up towards you until you feel some resistance, then try to have the knuckles on your right hand come back towards the forearm until you feel resistance. That’s neutral.

Once you can identify that position, take your grip without a club many times throughout the day and make that movement second nature.
