Softest balls for persimmon?

for my new Joe Powell driver

I just ordered a Joe Powell driver. Now, what is the softest golf ball on the market that will minimize the damage to the face?

It should be a good golf ball (not the exploding kind) :rolleyes: Ah, the days of balata!

P.S. If I was really going "Old School" I would get a Dynamic shaft. But I am having a Grafalloy Blue Pro Launch installed.

Balata is hands down the best way to go. Wound calls compress completely differently from modern multilayer balls.

 

That being said, if you're using modern balls, low compression (90 or below) is the way to go. Your best bets from my experimenting are:

 

Callaway HX Pearl (my favorite)

Srixon Z-URS

Wilson 50/50

Wilson Zip

2007 Nike Platinum

Bridgestone B330S

 

There are obviously more low compression balls out there to try, but those have worked the best for my needs.

Speaking of persimmon, I had this old Toney Penna persimmon driver with an Aldila (gold) shaft. It had a transparent black stain on it. I could absolutely crush the thing! Alas, my bag was stolen on a trip to Scotland (I left it outside the pro shop at Gullane and it was gone). Also stolen were my beloved Titleist Tour Box Blades.

Slightly off topic but what recommendations do you guy have for graphite in persimmon?

Still play S300's in mine but am looking for a new persimmon driver and might try a graphite this time around.

Any suggestions or ideas appreciated

Actually, a great question!

 

I am having a Grafalloy Blue ProLaunch installed in my new Joe Powell driver. John Powell said "Its a shame to put an ugly graphite shaft in such a beautiful persimmon head. Can't they make a black or silver graphite shaft?"

 

I saw somewhere that a company will paint your graphite shaft. Anyone remember?

I found a Titleist Tour 90 Balata yesterday that would be perfect.
