My sticks...

Recommended Posts

I thought some of you might enjoy this.
So it's the time of year up north where the golf season is winding down.

I thought I'd share a few pictures of my "backup sticks" that I take out to the links a few times of the year. It never fails, how the whoosh, and the click of hickory can bring a smile to ones face...

Hope you enjoy the pictures of my sticks.

Off to the links... I'm smiling already.

I've recently been playing with some soft Hogan Hawk balls. Pretty soft. Not as soft as an old balata, but fun non the less. If you catch it flush... it's just butter, can't even feel it... and the sound of the thick hickory shaft, the blade iron, and good contact is incredible. The driver (brassie) is very fun too, can hit low running draws all day long with it. I don't think they get 20 feet off the ground, but the distance is still very good. Runs out to around 250 with good contact. The vardon cleek is really cool. Plays similar to a 7 wood, high, and soft, around 190-200 yards. Our course is fairly short, around 6500 yards. I can still get it around about 40 a side, not much different then with the Titanium.

That is soooo cool.

All of those clubs look old but I recognize them as being new.... As you say, the irons are forged by Scratch (which is awesome, I did not know they did that!) and I am sure I have seen the company that makes those brand new persimmon woods. If I am off here and they are actually a few decades old let me know.. But I would be nervous gaming older clubs and would love to play a few rounds with some new hickory shafted clubs! The clubs, the bag... Totally awesome. Makes me nostalgic for an age I never lived or played in.

Very cool, I have a collection of hickory shafted clubs but am afraid to hit them, I am afraid the shafts would explode and the grips would come un-raveled. Do you play in hickory tournaments? How do you score with them compared to the modern clubs?

You are correct, they are new (the bag is indeed vintage though). Here is the deal. I own a full set of Hickory vintage clubs hand forged from Fife Scotland. They were my great grandfathers. Every year I would take them out, and play a round with them, until the point I got nervous about breaking them... So I set out in search of a playable set of hickories, and this is what I came up with. The woods are made by Louisville golf, and the irons by sweetwood golf, with the heads coming from Scratch golf. It's hard to describe how much fun they are to play with. It truly brings a genuine smile to your face... Hard to describe unless you experiance it. I even have a Calamity Jane replica putter that Jones won the grand slam with. (The driver is also what Bobby jones won the grand slam with, a Jack White replica). So yes, just a dream I had, that I made come true. Hopefully my boy, and his boy and so on will enjoy them as much as I do one day.

Awesome set you have there. I would love to try a set of those. What kind of SS do you have? I have always worried about the hickory with a higher SS.

No, I've never played in a hickory tournament, although I think it would be great fun... I live up in the boondocks, so I'm pretty removed from anywhere they hold such events.

Scoring? Actually I can get around the course quite well with these. The driver hits a low running draw like a dream, a real wind cheater with a good roll out... round about 240-260 depending. The vardon cleek around 190 with a high feathery flight, seems like it wants to hit a high fade for me which is perfect actually. The blades are very, very easy to hit. They feel very heavy... I don't know the swing weight but it must be in the mid E range somewhere. Whoosh-click... They almost swing themselves. Maybe one club short of my Scratch AR-1's. I'm pretty confident I could score pretty close to high tech, but don't play them all that much... Just when the mood strikes me. They sit right next to the fireplace in my living room otherwise...right close where I can look at them.

Thanks for your interest!

Oh PS: We are all so used to swinging 45-46 inch drivers... You would be AMAZED how easy it is to turn on a driver that is 43 inches in length, and is WHY most people can hit a 3 wood better off the tee. This brassie driver is a gem right off the deck too!

I've never been on a launch monitor. But I hit my FTI round about 270ish with good contact. So if I were to guess based on that... I'd guess I'm in the high 90's with a Driver.

I play soft balls, and just try to put a good pass on the ball... Seems to be the right combination... You can really FEEL the flex in the driver shaft, so you don't want to try blister it or bad things start to happen. My perception is Hickory, and a smooth tempo go hand-in-hand. The distance with the driver comes with the low running draw... you can almost hear it hiss off the club face when you catch it just right... then the smile comes...

Thanks for the interest.

Oh, and if you have never experienced a true leather wrap on the golf club, you are missing something special.
