Titleist AP2 and Mizuno MP52 iron spin rates

Hi!

I recently bought a set of Titleist AP 2 irons with Project x 5.5 shafts . I really liked the accuracy and feel of the irons, but the spin of the irons was very high for me. I was losing about 7-10 yards in distance per club as compared to my currant set of irons, the Mizuno MX 25 DGSL S300 . I noticed that the new Mizuno MP 52 is some what similar to the AP2 .The stock shaft is also the Project x 5.5 . How does the MP 52 compare to the AP 2 in ball spin rates? How is the accuracy of the MP 52? Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

CJ

the issue may not be the spin but the weight of the shaft. The px in the ap2's is about 115-120 where as the dgsl is about 105-110. even a few grams can get you a lot more distance. I have a set that is lofted the same but one has px 5.5 and one has dgsl and i hit the dgsl's about half a club farther as well.

I went through the same AP2 experience: Titleist AP2 "Ahah!" -- it's the shafts, it's the shafts!

For whatever reason, the usual DG vs. PX rules don't apply with AP2s. (I have no experience with the DGSL in AP2s.)

Mizzy irons of the past spun a little more than others, but I'd be surprised if the 52s impart a lot of spin with that design.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have owned both sets in Project X 5.5 (Played 52s for about two weeks before switching to AP2s).

Compared to my old Callaway X-20 Tours I've lost about a club length across the board(with 52s losing slightly more) due to high launching.

I've recently bent my AP2s 6iron 1deg upright and 7-PW 2deg upright and I've gained the distance back and reduced the spin to a some degree. AP2 and 52 have the same loft, however 52s seemed to spin a bit more. Hope this helps.

Okay folks, now this is confusing!

I have the AP2s with PX5.0 Flighted (yes, whimpy shaft compared to all the 6.5 & 7.0s)

But it was selected because my 6i SS is around 78 mph.

I thought the flex should go according to SS but you guys are saying, change flex to meet your ball flight requirement.

If the flex is too firm, then wouldn't I end up push right on most shots? But consistently right.... :-)
