Mizuno Tip Weights???

Hi all,

I am halfway done my first reshaft and i have run into a little speedbump. I pulled all of the s300s that were in my mp-32s. It turns out that there are tip weights in the shafts that seem to be stuck in place.

My question is, how much do they actually affect the swingweight (am i going to feel a difference without them), and if they are a big deal, is there an alternative,(i.e. lead tape, tungsten powder) that i should look into using?

Are they the type of tip weight that is a brass slug that slips into the tip of the shaft, or are they the red plastic thingamabobs that are epoxied into the tips flush?

 

My old Miz blades had the brass tip weights, but a later set of MP 29s had the other type. With the brass weights, you can usually heat the tip of the shaft and pull them off with pliers. If the grips are off, you can heat and use a ram rod to push the other type out.

 

I've seen up to 8 grams of weight in the tip of Mizunos, which isn't uncommon if someone wanted D-4 or D-5 swingweight at standard length. The best thing to do would be to pull them all out, then order new weights from golfsmith and re-swingweight the clubs where you want them. The only caveat is that for taper heads, you have to use the wood 0.335 version of the Golfsmith tip weight, which doesn't fit as snugly as the OEM tip weights that are made for 0.355 taper shafts.

They look like metal plugs but there is one that is some red foam looking thing. I am going to try to heat the tips and pull them. If not, I will buy some new ones.

Or the lead wates seem to form better to the .355 shafts. The lead will sheer and bend to fit into the tip. As NPV said, with heat they should just pull right out.

Mine were lead in my mp32's. Just heat the tip shaft and they will come out. If you are trying to salvage them heat and pull with some pliers. If you don't care just heat until they fall out. My head weights were really close to standard and only had to add two weights to my heads and no more than 2 grams each. If you are trying to get an exact swingweight I would adjust by shaft length instead of adding alot of shaft tip weight, Just my opinion though.

Weigh your heads once you get all the shafts pulled and the hosels cleaned. Write down how many grams each head weighs. I usually start off a 241-242 gram 3iron headweight and build in +7 gram increments down through the set. So after you weigh all the heads, you will know how much tip weight to epoxy in to the tip of each shaft during your build to keep the swingweights fluid through the set by getting each head where it needs to be weight wise. Generally you will end up D1-D3 at those headweights depending upon the weight of the grip you choose to use.
