Force in the golf swing

I'm interested in hearing peoples thoughts on forces evident in the golf swing, be it kinetic forces (termed analytical dynamics in modern physics) such as gravity or kinematic forces such as centripetal force.

Which forces do you believe are involved but more importantly what role do they play?

Evidence substantiating opinions required, references gentlemen!

Finally remember that we are dealing with rotational motion not linear.

I just returned from The Golfing Machine Summit and these points were discussed heavily.

I would be happy to take this off line with you. Just drop me a PM. This information could be considered TOP SECRET!

Seems to be a potentially great thread, Jaridyard.

Well, I am not a physician, although I have some basic knowledge in this branch. I would opt for the simplest possible explanations and not boring and complicated formulas and equations.

Therefore, my take is that a given amount kinetic energy is being created thanks to our muscles action being leveraged against the ground. This amount must be released in order to put the ball into the motion. Since human's body is a geometrically complicated mass (distal parts) the notion of the kinetic chain is very useful. Shortly saying, the last link in the chain are the most distal parts of our body, i.e. hands, or better said the clubhead which is a sort of additional body part in our example.

Conservation of Angular Momentum (e.g. cracking the whip) is a good scientific explanation of this process, however, one ust be aware that we are dealing not with the closed system, but with the system where the additional kinetic energy is being implemented due to our muscles work.

Centripetal force is just necessary to not let the club fly out of hands and it counteracts inertia of a rotational motion as well as gravity. It is differently used depending on a golf pattern, or better said, the timing of the CP force acting in the motion is different.

Just my 2 €cents :)

Cheers

P.S. Jeff, TOP SECRET INFORMATION ? What can be top secret in simple Newtionian physics related to swinging a stick in a game ? Is TGM dealing with nuclear fissions of shafts and clubheads ? :D

Don't take it wrong way, do not want to be rude or disrespect TGM Summit, but I can never understand how something very simple can be considered TOP SECRET.

D,

You would not understand! It is more simple than all that. The SECRET is FEEL! Everyone feel Newtons Laws differently.

jaridyard I will drop you a PM!

Wow, Jeff, thanks for the compliment for my intellectual level :D I did not think that I was able to understand only complicated things (which is obviously not true...LOL) while cannot comprehend simple ones ;)

So, if it is about FEEL, why is it top secret ? :)

Cheers

Deliberate overpowering of release, no golf ball was harmed during filming

So are you reccommending this as a drill to create more lag/force in the swing? Does it help you learn the feel?

Does it have to do with the #3 PP?

Sounds like Jeff has some important secrets!  SOOOO important that he didnt just PM from the beginning, he had to post it first so people would know he had the secret.  nice.......

So are you reccommending this as a drill to create more lag/force in the swing? Does it help you learn the feel?

God no! That sequence is just one subject attempting to overpower the force(s) present in the downswing, the stress on the shaft is incredible when you fight it.

I'm just interested in how to harness force most efficiently to produce results and in order to do that have to identify accurately what exactly is going on, there are far too many speculative attempts at this made with alarming regularity. Centrifugal force (if indeed those two words should ever be used together!) and centripetal being the main culprits.

Will this knowledge help the average golfer? Probably not, but a method borne of this knowedge will.

Thank God that is not a drill, i wasnt worried about golf balls being hurt, just my own balls!

I am inteseted how far this disucssion goes, so far everything has been pretty vague, I hope some of the more knowledgable gurus start chiming in with some real opinion.
