I can't speak to the Golf Sale specifically, but I can tell you to prepare yourself. It's a little like a flea market colliding with Costco, sprinkle in a little sub-saharan bazaar (not that I've been) and that's what you get a Building 19.

In short, it' a blast. While you're there can you pick me a 10,000 pack of 1" tees?

it's worth if you get there early! last year I heard they let the guy first in line (lord knows what time he got there) go in by himself for 5 minutes and that he spent over $1,500!

last year it was a lot of stuff from the closing of Wayland Golf... not sure where this year's merchandise will be from. they offer a 30 day money back guarantee so that takes some of the risk out of buying certain things.

it started at 9 last year... we got there at 8:55 and waited in line, outside (brrr), for probably an hour, hour & half but it was well worth it once we got in. will get there earlier this year.

getting 'in' meant into a room of mostly (mens) clothes - we also got a raffle ticket and were then let into 'the' room based on the numbers on our tickets - in groups of 20 or so I think - about 20 minutes later... 'the' room had more clothes (mostly womens) and all the other stuff - bags, balls, clubs, shoes, carts, etc.

I'll probably be in line in Burlington... I'm considering bringing a chair and my cart heater in case the line is long again. ;) say hi if you see someone fitting that description.

Deb.

[scene: Saturday 7 a.m. in Hingham, my 3 y.o. is running in circles and my 5 month old is howling b/c she wants to eat]

Me: um, gonna run down to uh, mm, Hanover this morning to see about getting something, for uh, ummm . . .

Wife: Hanover! What the hell are you talking about. Is this something golf related. You're supposed to be on kid duty Saturday a.m. . . .

Me: Well, you never know, I might find a great deal.

Her: You have two sets of irons you haven't even played yet. What more could you possibly need?

Me: um, okay. What if I take the kids with me?

[so if you see a dude there with a toddler and an infant, you'll know it's me . . . ]

The funny thing, Mugnut, is that I can't even tell my wife about your hysterical post...

Me: So I was on this Golf Forum, and this guy...

Wife: Oh my god, you were in a golf chat room?

Me: Well, it's not a chat room...it's a forum. Anyway, this guy Mugnut...

Wife: Mugnut?

Me: Yeah, but...

Wife: Wait, you were surfing a golf chat room while you were at work?!

Me: Uhm, why don't we get Chinese for dinner...

I went to the one in Hanover a couple of years ago while I was working in Boston, I picked up, 1. A very nice Adams Tight Lies Tour 3 wood for $19. 2. A couple of brand new hubs for my boat trailer for 12 bucks apiece. 3. A TaylorMade 320 Tour Driver for I think around $79, sold it to a friend for $80, (cool $1 profit), oh, and two very nice Penn Fishing Reels for about half of retail price.

My wife got

1. About 6000 votive candles

2. Some kind of cleaner thingamajig thats supposed to heat water to about 10,000 degrees farenheight and clean with steam (still in the box) (afraid to open it and actually use it)

3. A crapload of plantfood

4. About 15 wicker baskets that the cat takes turns either a: destroying or b: sleeping in

Wife: Honey, I'm going to that Building 19 thing again, want to come with?

Me: (Fakes a seizure and stays home and watches "Smokey and the Bandit" on TMC)

Wife: Ok, I'm taking the pickup truck!

Me: Fine, say hi to Mugnut for me

TJW - you're right. My wife (who is indeed very indulgent of my spending (and drinking) patterns) hasn't gotten wise to Golf WRX yet - she thought I was nuts for hanging out the Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum and a Telemark skiing site . . .

But she's so not a gearhead, so she wouldn't understand.

lot of Boston folks here - we'll have to get WRX tourney together in the spring . . .

definitely decent stuff... not the latest and greatest models but all the big names.

last year at the Burlington location, the sale was in a separate building and it was only golf merchandise... to get the typical Bldg 19 merchandise you had to walk across the parking lot to a different building - no lines, no waiting!

they bring stuff in specifically for this sale, have it at only a few locations initially then spread it out to the rest of the stores afterwards.

I think there's a golf sale at a hotel in Woburn on Saturday as well... last year we hit both on the same day and while the show at the hotel was more civilized and organized than Bldg 19 they had some of the same equipment - at higher prices.

Sorry for changing the subject, but if you Boston readers didn't see my post in the Instruction forum...

Anyone have a Boston MetroWest instructor recommendation? Maybe someone at Stow Acres? Or has anyone ever used Kevin Frawley (now based out of Foxboro)?

Thanks.

Hi If I you are looking for someone over at Stow I would give Dan Halverson a ring. He is a great teacher as well as a great guy. I started my teaching career there 6 years ago before moving to Pinehills in Plymouth. I'll be speaking at the national golf expo in Boston next weekend if you want to stop by and say hello and I can get you going in the right direction.

T.J.

P.S. The Shrewsbury building 19 is still Spags to us shrewsbury natives :-)

I think that tournament would have a pretty significant turnout. For what it is worth, my money would be on the NESCAC alums.

I wish I could have been NESCAC myself, but the hockey coaches at Middlebury and Williams told me they couldn't get me in. When I listed the D1 schools that were offering me rides, they laughed and told me that D1 schools can sneak guys in, NESCAC doesn't have that option.

I am all in for a Boston area WRX tourney!!!

By the way when did you graduate from Colby? I knew a few guys who went there.

I've been to the Building 19 sale a couple of years and think they have a lot of crap for sale, unless you are in the market for 12 year old arnold palmer metal spike saddle shoes or dunlop metal woods from 1995. The sale in Woburn is the Fresh Pond Golf Course proshop along with a couple of other green grass proshops and I have found that they have some of the best prices anytime of year. Also, it seems they have the latest and greatest at discount prices. There's an ad in the Globe today or go to freshpondgolf.com to look it up . The hotel is of of 93 just south of 95 in Woburn.

It will always be Spags to me. I can remember the sports store that they had there. When I was in little league I used to buy my new equipment there every year. Looks like this sickness of mine began at a young age. I guess I have just traded baseball gloves and bats for wedges and hybrids. I need help.

I graduated Colby in 2004, and I got to see firsthand how difficult it was to get recruited athletes into school. It made for some pretty difficult baseball seasons near the end of my time there.

Jason,

How are ya my man? Hopefully we can get a few rounds out again this year. The g/f work scheduled changed to I should be able to play more then I did in 2005. I am ordering a 905R tonight, I already got a new 3 wood and I am changing my iron shafts to some premium graphites so I am really looking forward to 2006.

I'm sure we'll talk once the weather break.

Take Care,

Mike

To change topics for a second, does anyone know the first golf course to open in the area? I know that Putterham is scheduled to open on March 1st, but I didnt know if there was anywhere in the Metrowest or Greater Boston area that is open sooner. FYI, on Saturday I will be the guy sporting the homeless/law school finals beard and a Penn State hat at Spags.

One of the Stow Acres courses opened a few weeks ago when the weather broke (I cut out of work early and got 9 holes in). I think it was the South course. Don't know if they're still open. Still ridiculous prices...$25 for 9 holes. Seemed a bit much for January!

There's also a small couse in Natick (Sassamon Trace). I've never played there before, but I called last month and they said they'd be opening mid-Feb weather permitting.

See ya out there.

Thank you for the update. I have actually played Sassamon a number of times. It is a short 9 hole course in Natick. It is actually is good shape and when the wind blows it can be a difficult course to play. I hope if I got out there that it would be a quick round, because my only complaint there is the pace of play. For some inexplable reason people take forever to complete their rounds of golf there.

I love Stowe...when I can get in a round under five and a half hours. The North Course is one of the toughest tests around but it's brutal to play at that pace.
