Drawback to Golf GPS

Well I took my GPS out to the course today to test it out. I could not play because it was to cold.

The drawback to having a GPS is that I now know that I don't hit my drives nearly as far as I thought I did. :russian_roulette:

I know what you mean. I just got a SG 2.5 for Christmas. Took it out to the course just to walk around and see how it works. I checked the distances of some of the drives that I hit last year and found that if I killed one it only went about 270 yrds. Before I would have sworn that it was out close to 300 yrds. LOL!!!

It's ugly, but it's true. I would have sworn to being a 250-275 driver of the bal, but the reality (according to my new SG5) is more like 235-250!

Your yardages sound about like what mine used to be and what they really are.

I took my GPS and created a mark for the 150 yard marker on each hole. The goal is to get to 150 yards and in the fairway. From that point the wost I should should most of the time is bogey.

Quite a humbling machine. Some of the guys I play with who would overstate their distances didn't like the mark ball feature hehe.

I ran into this with my father-in-law. He thinks that every drive I hit must be close to 300. I had to disappoint both of us when I used the shot distance feature on my GPS.

Most golfers have an "inflated" view of their drives, and a deflated view of their scores. Reality sucks.

That's actually a pretty cool idea at my home course. If I just walk it backwards from the green, I could have a great idea of a "safe zone" for myself on approach shots and maybe even knock down a few strokes.

MY GPS-8 already had the 150 yard and 125 yard layup points programmed in for each course. It does make it easier to pick a club when the driver isn't the best choice.

does it really? I have the GPS-8 but haven't had a chance to use it yet. Does it have those lay-up distances on all par 4 & 5s? or just those with hazards?

I have Golf Guru and found that the 100 Yard marker was always programmed but, the 150 yard marker and 200 yard marker were not always programmed. One advantage of the Guru is that I can add these points with no problem.

Mine is the GPS-8 as well. They should be on all par 4's and 5's. I've only used mine a couple of times since Christmas (Ohio weather), but I'm sure I saw it on all holes (except par 3's of course).

I have a golf logix, and every hole has distance to lay up at 100, 125, and 150 yards. I have been humbled also by the driving distance versus scorecard/sprinkler head technology! But every now and again its sweet to really rip one and see 300+ on the LCD! (cool)

i can hit it 300, if there is a strong wind behind me and I hit the cart path....

i found that I was shorter than I thought too...286yds was the longest I had since I got my gps.... average about 250-270... very eye opening...

well , what is his response when you hit a drive on a 320 yard hole and end up 95 yards from the green ?
