Looking for a "Magic Golf Ball"

I really like the way the Pro V1 plays around the greens - specifically the say you can spin the ball with a SW or LW from 40 yards or less (sometimes much less).

But I do occasionally spin this ball too much when hitting a full SW or LW (I'm not a big hitter - high 90's driver SS). I don't have this problem with the V1x and I prefer the V1x off the tee as well.

So what I really want is a ball that plays like a V1x on full shots and like a V1 from inside 45 yards or so. Is there such a thing out there?

i would check out the callaway tour i series or the tp balls from taylormade but i have to say i find the tour i and ix very magical but im sure some one will recomend the srixon balls...

try a TM TP Red LDP.

The TP Red is slightly softer and spins less than the Black version. The Srixon Z-Star is going to feel the most like the Pro V1. It is very soft and spins slightly less but is much much more durable. The Callaway balls feel clicky to me and I don't like the sound so I don't play them any more. The HX Blue was my favorite Callaway ball. The Nike One Tour will spin way to much for you if the Pro V1 currently does and does not have the greatest durability compared to the TaylorMade balls. I currently prefer the Taylormade TP Black for its combination of spin and durability. I was going through a dozen Nike One Tours in 2 weeks. (edit: I still prefer the Nike One Tour for serious rounds and Tourneys) The TP Blacks play similar, though more firm than the Pro V1, but durability is much better which is what I was looking for. If you find that magic ball make sure to stop back and let us know what you went with. My recommendation for what you are asking for is the Srizon Z-Star. At least get a sleeve and see for yourself. I was very surprised with the feel of these balls and the lower spin rate is exactly what you are looking for.

It is interesting that you mentioned the HX Blue. I played that for a while and REALLY liked it from inside 50 yards. But it didn't work for well me off the tee, so I ended up playing the HX Red for a while (played much like the V1x for me - maybe a tad more greenside spin).

 

The Strata Tour Ultimate was another serious favorite of mine other than the fact that it had the durability of wet tissue paper. I'll swear that if you picked up and dropped (from say 2') an unopened sleeve of those balls, they would come out of the sleeve marked and barely playable. OK, a slight exaggeration (but not as much as you'd think).

The HX Blue is by far the shortest ball I have hit off the tee for a while. Except for the 2 pack of Wilson Zip's that I bought. I wanted to see what 0 compression felt like. Felt like hitting a stale marshmellow and just like a marshmellow it didn't go anywhere. I never played the Strata that you mentioned but have heard they were very easy to shred. Since less spin is what you are looking for then I think that the Srixon Z-Star is going to be a contender. It is good that you will consider other brands as many people will not ever play anything but a Titleist. I was one of them till I found that the other manufactures make great balls that fit my game as well. I played through a dozen (Z-Stars) and just didn't like the reduced spin that I got. I play on a hardpan course and mid summer they were not going to work. Feel off irons, distance off tee, and the softness putting was all A+. One of my playing partners now plays them after trying one of mine and he loves them. I like being able to rip the ball back on greens and have little trouble controlling spin which is why I prefer the higher spinning balls. I think that you will like the performance in the Z-Star.
