Which Driver would you buy and why?

Recommended Posts

Im getting a new driver but cant decide which to buy.

My choices are narrowed down to these: LOL

King Cobra - x/f/m speed, 460sz, or maybe even 454,427,414.

Nike Sasquatch

Big Bertha 460x (I also really like the Big Bertha II 2004 - hit a nice draw and they are cheap-LOL)

Titlest 905 t/r

SMT Nemisis,02,Spectrum

Whats your opinion and does anyone regularly play these drivers?

I guess my biggest question is WHICH ONE WILL CRUSH IT? - I hit TMs (R5TP and R510TP) now about 300-330yrds.

Thanks in advance for your assistance. JB

I posted this review about the new R7 425 TP several days ago...

Holy Smokes, Batman!

Got to hit one on a launch monitor yesterday and ordered the TP 8.5* w/ the 75 X Rombax after 5 swings.

Driver I have been playing with is a 7.5* R510 TP w/ ZCOM MW74 X and it is tipped 1/2".

Numbers with the 510 TP:

Swing speed: 126

Ball speed: 178

RPMs: 3900

Ball height at apex: 74 yds

Carry: 298 yds

Numbers with the 425 TP:

Swing Speed: 126

Ball Speed: 186

RPMs: 3600

Ball height at apex: 55 yds.

Carry: 304 yds

Folks, this is one unbelievable golf club. I've been playing golf for 35 years and haven't been wowed by many golf clubs, but TaylorMade has set the standard with this one.

Looks:

The head is a little longer from heel to toe than my 510, but I love the look. It gives a distinct feel of confidence that you can just get up an hammer it.

Sound:

Sounds much like my 510. No tinny "twanck" that you get with some larger heads. Just a good solid "thwack" like you get with the 510.

Feel:

Possibly the most solid driver that I've ever hit. With the 510, if you catch it just a little off center, the feedback is immediate and sometimes quite harsh. An off-center hit with the 425 TP still gave immediate feedback, but wasn't nearly as harsh, and I only lost about 8 yds. on average and the ball still stayed within 10-12 yds. of my target line.

I'm convinced that the shaft is the difference maker here. The new Re*Ax w/ Rombax tech. is a winner for TM. All the Fujikura shafts that I have ever hit felt somewhat "soft" to me. The Rombax didn't feel soft at all. In fact, it felt as if it might play a little stiffer than advertised flex. I loved it. I could get up and really try to stomp on it without any fear of the shaft not being able to keep up.

I said it earlier and I'll say it again, TM has once again set the standard for drivers with this one.

Hope this helps...

Wow 300-330 is huge.

These are the PGA players and their equipment which works for them.

1. Bubba Watson -G5 319.4 driving distance

2. JB Holmes - Cobra 312.9 driving distance

3. CamiloVillegas - 905R 308.5 driving distance

4. Tag Ridings - ? 306.9 driving distance

5. John Daly - R7 460 306.7 driving distance

Does anyone know what Tag uses?

Before you buy your driver hit the Hi-Bore. I never in my wildest imagination thought I would play a Cleveland driver, especially one that is so radically designed. With your numbers where they are, you will be off the charts with the Hi-Bore. My friend at Edwin Watts convinced me to try it and man I'm glad I did. I was hitting my drives around 280 before the Hi-Bore. Now I am regularly hitting legitimate 300 yard drives (something I did not think I could do anymore). It may not be for you, but it is definitely worth a try !!!

Exotics CB5 (15*)
TM Rescue TP (19*)

+1

It's worth a shot, for me and my swing (no matter what loft or shaft) the ball seemed to fall out of the sky like a dead duck. Way way too low spin.

The R7 425 is a great club, felt awesome too. But the HiBore and the 905R tested better on the launch monitor. The HiBore is a close second, I can play either the HiBore or the 905R. The R7 425 was trailing by several yards, but it was probably the shaft.

The SMT nemesis didn't work out to well for me.

I bought the 905R and I'm happy with it.

Well, I have always been something of a TM guy, but I have to say that this has now changed. Having tried all the modern drivers from Nike, Callaway etc etc I have settled on the Ping G2. This thing is absolutely the bomb!

It allows you to get high launch and low spin (the holy grail of long drives that dont veer off line in the wind) better than any other I have tried. Coupled to that, it is stupidly forgiving and long! OK, so the feeling at impact is not quite as nice as my TM 510 TP, but I can live with that.

I really suggest you give the G2 a try. It is way better than the G5 and can be found for very cheap on ebay. Unless you have a very high swing speed, I would go with the 10 degree. I promise it wont go too high! All these guys boasting about hitting their 7 degree drivers dead straight and 350 yards are simply full of sh**! I just don't buy it and think it is sad to have to boast on review sites. Maybe they are compensating for something? I am a 6 handicap with above average swing speed and ever it more than 250-260 plus roll. Oh well, enough of that.

As for the shaft, this is a very personal thing. I am still in love with the good old Fuji Speeder 757 in stiff flex, although the Prolaunch is also excellent in this head.

Hope this helps

If you're hitting the R5 TP and R510 that long, why change? I don't think any of the legal drivers will give you more distance, as evidenced by the multiple recommendations.

I'd also pick the SQ, but I also have an R7 and have had an R5 TP and R510 TP. The SQ is no longer, just straighter for me. So far.

Or the Hibore.

Cheers

If you can hit your R5TP that far, I would stick with that. You probably won't see much more distance or forgiveness from the other drivers you listed.

But, if you're just looking to try something new, I would suggest hitting the Callaway X-460 Tour. Sets up nice, with no distractions. Sole design works as advertised. Launch angle is actaully pretty low for this club head, so you don't have to worry about hitting drives that balloon.

  • 8 months later...

My buddy plays the Cobra F speed in a 10.5* and he has let me play a couple of rounds with it and it's pretty long and forgiving. Mishits you get plenty of feedback on where you are hitting it and plus the face is pretty hotter. The sound can be numbing at times but that is common with most 460cc drivers. Then my next choice would be the SQ. I've hit it pretty well on the monitor and it seems pretty long compared to other drivers on the market.

properly fit, all the drivers you listed will be long. now its a matter of figuring out which one fits your eye the best and your game (draw or neutral biased).

with that said, of the ones you listed i would go with the sasquatch, but i could be biased - course it could be because it works so well.
