Why make an iron more flat?

Hey guys....I just got new clubs and they want me to make them 1 degree more flat. I was just wondering why you would want this? I know you change the lie according to where you strike the ground....heel vs. toe. I dunno, guess I'm just confused about why I would want to change the lie angle to more flat when the MP-60's are already flatter then most. Another thing is that the club fitter never tested me he is just going by my height and wrist to floor measurements seeing I'm ordering the clubs on the net. I almost forgot...I'm increasing the length of the clubs by 1/4", would this be the reasoning behind the 1 degree flat suggestion?

If he is trying to bend your clubs without actually testing you or measuring the actual lie angles to begin with, then you might want to go to a real club fitter

Well if you think about it, once you lengthen the shaft, the lie is going to have to change. It sounds to me like the clubfitter is using static measurements to give you a semi-custom fit.

 

I believe the only way to get accurately fit is by hiting balls with a launch monitor, impact tape and a lie board to find the right combo. Obviously, not everyone has access to all of that, but it is worth a trip if you have to travel to make it happen. Some of my buddies here have never been fit and I have told them they NEED to go see this one guy here who fits Mizuno's. They all, for the most part, thought that getting a cusotm fit set of clubs would add $$$ to the clubs and rationalized they do fine with off the rack, so why pay more? The fact is, any quality clubfitter will not charge you more to get a set of irons that fit you properly. I think you can tell when you find a clubfitter that actually cares more about the customer getting what is best for them and has a real passion for providing guys with the right stuff rather than just turning their inventory.

Making your clubs 1/4" longer will make them slightly (about 1/2 degree) more upright.

For every 1/2" of length added you effectivley make the clubs 1* more Upright.

Thanks for all the comments guys. The guy I'm getting the clubs from is an authorized Mizuno dealer. After talking to him about it he told me I need to make them 1 degree flatter because of the 1/4 increase in length. After I get a chance to play with them for a while I plan on going in and getting a real fitting.

I have another question for you guys. I have 3 Cleveland CG 10 black pearl wedges and I was wondering if you could have these bent a couple of degrees more flat. I'm afraid that there might be some small cracking in the finish if I do this. Hell I don't know anything about this subject though so I might just be being paronoid.

That finish will probably crack if bent more than a degree. It may crack if you bend it at all...

I've heard quite a few horror stories about the CG10's and bending bars. . .

 

The black pearl finish is notorious for spidering (just a cosmetic issue), but more importantly I've heard of hosels snapping off clean during a slight bend. My clubmaker won't touch them for this reason.

 

Check with your clubmaker and see what his experiences are. It'd be a pain to have the metal fail and him shake his head and point to a sign that says "not responsible for damage to clubs during bending."

you might save cash buying online but if you want irons fitted correctly you need to get fitted on course with a P.G.A. pro.

Yeah Alan I realize that I need to get fitted by a pro and I'm going to once I get a chance to play with the irons for a while. The only reason I'm getting my MP-60's a little tweaked is because that is what the Mizuno club fitter told me to do. If i don't like it once I play with them for a while it will be no problem to have them bent back.
