Going to Hilton Head, Need Your Advice

Rank These Courses
Going to Hilton Head again this spring as we have a time share in the Sea Pines Resort. Our timeshare offers free golf at Heron Point and the Ocean Course and one free round at Harbour Town. Although this year I am looking to check out more courses, and see what the rest of the island has to offer. Let me know what anyone thinks of the following courses:

Rank these Courses

Port Royal Plantation
Robber's Row
Barony
Planter's Row

Shipyard Plantation
Clipper
Galleon
Brigatine

Palmetto Hall Plantation
Arthur Hills
Robert Cupp
Oyster Reef

Beyond the three you're playing at Sea Pines, my other favorite HHI courses are not on your list. I like two of the three at Palmetto Dunes: the Arthur Hills course (not to be confused with the A.H. course you mention at Palmetto Hall) and the Robert Trent Jones course. I've played the courses on your list (with the exception of one of the nines at Shipyard) and not enjoyed them quite as much as my favorite Palmetto Dunes courses, primarily because of conditioning. That, I'm sure, can change from year to year, and I have no idea what the conditions are now, but I have become a loyal player at the ones I mentioned for better or worse.

Just off island, and at lower cost, I like Old South.

Maybe when you get back you'll awaken this thread and let us know what you did and what you liked.

I have heard Oyster Reef is really nice for the price.
I've heard recently that Old South has had some management and money problems so they can be hit or miss.
Another good off island course is Hilton Head National.
When I was on HHI in Oct. I played Hilton Head National and the Sea Pines Club Course and both were great.
Let us know what you end up playing.

The 3 you have access to on Sea Pines are better courses than any on your rank list except for Palmetto Hall Arthur Hills. It's a really nice track. Oyster Reef is also good although not as good as the Sea Pines courses. I've played all the Port Royal Courses - Barony and Planter's Row are 25 year old resort courses set amongst the houses and condos and are fairly short yardage-wise. They're nice for a casual round but not that great. Robbers Row is the best of the 3 Port Royal as it was re-done by Pete Dye about 15 years ago. FYI, the 3 courses you have listed at Shipyard are all 9 hole layouts. They mix and match when you play 18 to keep traffic to decent levels. Shipyard is fun, I heard they just re-did fairways and greens last year with a new grass type that needs less water. That was always a problem for them in the middle of summer.

See if your pro will call and get you on the Dye private course down there. I can't remember the name right now, but it is great![/quote]

I agree! I played HHN 2 weeks ago and it was in great condition. A little wet in few areas from all the rain we have been getting but it should be great. Everything is overseeded and greens rolled smooth.

Old South is a great and very fun course! One of my favorites anywhere.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
