Iron lie angles

Is there a resaon that lie angles are getting more upright? My 5 iron is 58* and I notice now that everything is at least 60*...Titleist are at 62* which for me would require a 4* bend...I am just curious is there a particular reason that standard lies are a couple of degrees more upright now?

dont know. what i do know is that you shouldnt assume because you play one iron at a certain lie angle another iron will automatically fit you at that angle. i dont know why this is... i'm sure others on here do... but make sure you try each different set of irons before making adjustments. just my 2 cents.

it might be that the modern golf swing is more upright. thats what they're teaching the kids... right or wrong... everyone say right so i guess so.

ALL major OEM's have custom order programs. They WANT golfers to get fit.

 

I have no idea why any golfer would buy irons off the rack. It makes no sense since just about every retailer has a cart with six irons filled with different lengths and lie combinations under the sun. There are demo days where you can test different lies and lengths out on real grass and actually see the ball flight.

 

It doesn't help answer your question any, but the stock lie angle doesn't really matter when you can and should order it to be just about whatever you want.

Just a guess but maybe it is because the average height of a person is going up. Taller people tend to have a more upright swing therefore OEM's have adjusted stock clubs to fit the average person. I'm only 5'7" so everyone is tall to me but that would my best guess.

I am a short, 5'8" one planer...so that might be the problem.

My concern is that bending 4* is not recommened...most of the OEMs say 2*...I wonder if going to a different shaft would would change the kick down or whatever it is called and allow for a more upright lie angle.

What would be a typical lie angle profile for an 8 iron for someone playing with a one plane swing? I know there is no "standard", however, there have to be some general lie angles for the masses to start from.

 

For example, would 61* be a normal lie angle for an 8 iron for someone playing with a one plane swing?

Maybe because modern 5 irons are really 4 irons mis-stamped in order to sell you a gap wedge (formerly included in sets and known as a Pitching Wedge) - and so that you now get a 2 and 3 iron mis-stamped 3 and 4 - that you can't hit - but they have a solution....buy some hybrids.

 

Modern sticks are also 1/2" longer....unless you're talking ping drivers - then it's more like 2.5"!!

Also, an upright lie tends to help combat the commonest fault in golf - the slice.

Just picked up a set of x20 tours with proj x 5.5 flighted. Friend said they are 2* flat but he is 5'9". I am 5'11" . How bad will this affect my flight if any? Can they be readjusted? I got a great deal at $250.

Well a divot examination will help you. If your divots are toe-deep then that is sign that it is too flat for you. If you hit off of a mat, you can tape the bottom of a club and if the tape near the toe wears out quickly or gets marked up that's another sign. Theoretically, you'll see balls go to the right, but especially pronounced in the short irons and not so much in the long irons.

 

The reason is the high amount of loft on the club will skew the line of flight off the clubhead. To see this in action, take your putter and your wedge and lie them on the ground with the heels of the club on the ground. The putter has what, 4 degrees of loft that is pointed to the left. Your wedge on the other hand will be pointed ~50 degrees to the left. The opposite is true if the club is too flat, it will tend to point to the right like mentioned in the above paragraph. (you can see this counter-point by dangling the shaft vertically and noting how far right the face is aiming)

 

Obviously these are huge exaggerations but it will help you visualize the theory behind it.

 

If you think your clubs are too flat, I'd go to a fitter for advice. He would help you determine how much adjustment is needed and how much would be safe for your club. The fitter can also note any flaws in your swing that could cause weird divots. That's happened to me before but that's another story. I hope all this wasn't too confusing.

Like it has been said many times before, there is no set lie angle for your height. It all depends on how you are at address, arm length, etc...etc...

I am 6'1" and I just put together my new set G40+ irons 5-pw, Cleavland 48, 52, 56, 60 wedges and I bent them all 2* flat which is opposite of what you would think for my height but thats what gives me a uniform divot. Thats why I love having my own Loft lie bender. Can go out shoot a round get yardages and flight path and come home and tweek to my specs.

Still not upright enough for me! 6'5" with a wrist to floor of 40 inches (off the charts). Let's just say I play titleist irons, and still have to have them 4* upright (actually they are onlt bent 1* as the shafts are 1.5" long and by installing them after bending, it makes it play 4* up).

 

Imagine the fun I have when I go into the golf shop and try out new off the shelf clubs!
