Santee Golf Trip

Recommended Posts

Planning on going with a group in March to Santee, SC for a few days. I believe we are playing Lake Marion Golf Club, Santee National Golf Club, & Santee Cooper Country Club.

We have an extra day to get in a round somewhere else. I have looked at Wyboo Golf Club, which is close in proximity to the other three. Is it a good track? Any other suggestions? Price doesn't matter. Thanks.

Both the Players Club at Wyboo and Wyboo are pretty good and literally almost across the street from each other. Santee National is alright as well. Lake Marion was terrible when I played with even poorer service....we also drove a bit and played Crowfield as well.

Cheap golf, BUT NOTHING to do nearby.

I'd say in order Santee Cooper, Lake Marion, Santee National. If you are looking for a 4th course, consider the short drive to Charleston. If budget golf is of concern, consider some nicer, but not as pricey courses like Links at Stono Ferry, Patriots Point, Charleston National, etc. Charleston isn't much further from Santee area and worthy of consideration.

Was there at the end of January -- Santee Cooper had a lot of machinery doing some peripheral grading and work in the trees while I was there, but was otherwise okay. Personally, preferred Santee National of the three (it is rated 4 stars by Golf Digest, the others 3 1/2). Wyboo was fine, but the sleeper for me was Indian River up near Columbia. While it was a little wet the day I played it, I had the whole place to myself!

Rates ranged from $25 to $35 for me at the courses, but residents may fare better.

And yes, 'Gentlemen's Clubs' (whatever they are) were somewhat conspicuous by their presence

Will be going to Santee next week for the 5th year in a row. Love it. Don't expect Augusta National and you won't be disappointed...haha. Generally good tracks down there - just take lots of cigars, booze and $1 bills 'cause other than golf and evenings at Shooters (the adult entertainment) there's not much to do. Clarks Inn Restaurant is a really good place for a nice dinner and there's a good seafood joint up the road that I can't remember the name of.

National probably has some of the more interesting hole layouts of the four main Santee courses. I agree with previous poster about Santee Cooper (short, target golf) and always seems to be windy. Most years ours has been a 5 day trip, so we repeat a course...usually and preferably Santee National. Last year we did 6 days and drove about an hour south and played Crowfield...definitely my favorite "add-on" course. Here's our order of preference:

1. Santee National
2. Lake Marion
3. Santee Cooper
4. Players Course at Wyboo

Last year we dropped Wyboo and played National twice and Lake Marion twice and added the day trip to play a Crowfield (worth it in my opinion). I've had mixed experiences at Wyboo Players though...1st and 2nd year to Santee it was my favorite, but the 3rd and 4th year it was like playing on asphalt. It does however have quite a few neat holes though. It's back in our rotation for this year, so we'll see how it looks next week.

When are you going to Santee? If I'm back before you leave I'll repost with course conditions.

Enjoy & have fun!

All three courses in Santee are fine.
My ranking:
1)Santee National
2)Lake Marion
3)Santee Cooper

I prefer Wyboo over the Players Course at Wyboo. I've found Wyboo to be the more challenging of the two (though not terribly so), and have found it to always be in better condition regardless of the time of year I visited. And, yes these are directly across the street from each other.
If you want to drive about an hour, Crowfield is a good choice.

Other items:
Absolutely DO NOT MISS eating at Lone Star. It is about 1/2 mile down State Park Road, almost directly across from the Santee National clubhouse. All you can eat buffet of "home cookin." Do try the Tomato Pie.
For steak, drive east on SC 6 to Eutawville, then toward Eutaw Springs to Chef's Choice (about a 30 min. drive). Steaks cooked over an open charcoal pit right there on the dining room floor. I recommend the big Ribeye and a cold beer after 36 holes on Sat.
For outstanding SC Bar-B-Que, try Sweatman's (sweet ketchup-based and mustard-based sauces) between Eutawville and Holly Hill (35 mins.), or McCabe's (vinegar-based sauce) in Manning (25 min. north on I-95).

Please reprt on your trip.
Have fun!!

After seeing Santee's post I realized I made a mistake...it's Wyboo, not the Players Club at Wyboo that we normally play.

DEFINITELY go to Chef's Choice. We went there for the 1st time last year...great food. And thanks Santee for the new ideas on places to eat, I'm looking forward to trying some of those next week too.

Looking to head down to Santee.

Any course condition updates, restaurant updates and gentleman's entertainment clubs would be much appreciated since the info on here is now about 2 years old.

Also if I do not hit the driver that straight most of the time are there any of the most often mentioned courses that I am likely to lose a ton of balls on?

What about alligators in this area?

As a Canadian am I likely to get better rates via Golf Now etc. rather than by just walking in the pro shop?

Anybody been there lately?

Thanks for the help.
