2010 Cleveland CG1 Tour Progressive Set

I'm not so sure what all the fuss about being forged has to do with a good looking, well performing set of irons? IMO, the composition of the metal, the finish, what type of shaft and grip have more to due with feel than an iron being forged. Beautiful looking set none the less!

God Bless
Jer

The whole cast vs. forged debate is pretty silly these days. The real argument is twofold, what metal, and what method. Some clubs are forged from carbon steel. Some clubs are cast from carbon steel. Some clubs are cast from stainless steel. Some (although it's very, very, very rare) are forged from stainless steel.

For what it's worth, Cleveland's CG-12s are as good as any forged product on the market. My irons are all forged 1025 steel, and my CG-12 60° is form forged 8620. 1025 is a lower carbon steel, fairly pure. 8620 is not a true carbon steel IIRC, it's got manganese in it. The difference is so minute though, and I'm autistic, I am one of the most sensitive people you'll ever meet.

The 1025 forged irons feel soft, and have a "grainy", almost like a loaf of hard bread on mishits, they have a feel a little like sand flowing through the hand. The 8620 form forged feels more solid, and has a more dull feel, like a hard rubber or plastic, a bit more like static electricity. Sure, there's some difference in feel, but one isn't really better or worse than the other, they're just different.

My sand wedge is cast. It's totally different, both in feel and sound. It's good because it's durable from the sand and questionable conditions. I am not afraid to beat it up a little bit. The grooves are worn down, but I'm calling it practice for the new grooves.

BUT, imo I think Cleaveland has always made their irons out of the cheapest feeling metal and you can't bend them more than a degree in lie angle without risk of breakage. I know because 3 of my old CG1's were broke trying to bend them 2 degrees. When they broke I looked at the site and the metal inside was porous. I play TP irons that are cast and have bent them all over the map. Just my .02

Nah, I had my CG-12 bent 3° with no problems, and my 588 was bent 2.5°. You just need a good clubmaker. I have a guy I go to who can do nearly anything. I just need to find someone now to bend woods.

The new Scratch wedges are also 8620 steel, like these new Cleveland irons. I love the Scratch wedges in this metal too. The feel (or, more accurately, the sound) on the new Scratch wedges is very very close to these new Cleveland irons. Solidly soft. I will say it again... you've got to try these. These pretty much moot the buttery forged -vs- harsh cast debate, because, once you hit them, you won't give a s--t if someone poured molten metal in mold to cast them, or smashed a billet with a hammer press to forge them. You're eyes will roll back in your head, and you'll just drag over another ball from the pile and fire another round down the range. Squish-thwack.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
