Its pretty hard to believe that a 60 year old man can hit a 220 yard 2 iron with enough spin to stop a ball from 220 yards. I know he and I have clashed on this site from similar claims. He might be able to do it but its very hard to believe seeing as probably less than 1% of the Champions Tour carry a 2 iron, or a 3 iron for that matter and they hit the ball far better than a 1.3 handicap. I haven't played with a 1 handicap that impressed me as far as ball striking goes.

I'm surprised the OP doesn't have a huge gap from 4 iron to 18 degree hybrid. Last season I played a 18 degree Peanut and AP2 4 iron and have probably a 35 yard carry gap between those 2 clubs. But like him never found anything I liked so I just carried a 3 iron that I seldom hit. I think I'm gonna go 23 degree Pro Black this year. 1 degree stronger than my 4 iron but longer, lighter shaft should give me more distance and added height I need to stop a ball from 220. I carry the same handicap as the OP, +2 and I cannot stop a 3 iron from 220 either.

I, as a not as good as you fellas golfer, think that the additional hybrid sounds like a good plan. It seems that Hybrids are getting to be the norm on tour and the 2 and 3 iron are disappearing. I'm happy for you guys being able to stop a 2i, but can you hit it perfect as often as a hybrib? Some really good ballstiking there for sure!

I know you said you didn't like it, but since you said your using the new grooves, maybe a 64* would be good so you could rely more on loft than spin, especially out of the rough

looking at your bag setup and reading your aditional comments it looks clear to me you don't need the 14th club

i was in the exact same boat as you and i am also a low handicap
only diff is that my hybrid is 20 deg, but i hit it approx. 225-230
and my 3 wood approx. 250-260 so i didnt want to get like an 18 degree hybrid and then take out my 20 deg because i hit the 20 deg plenty far, so i got an AP2 3-iron (ironic we have the same set of clubs) and i really like it, hit it about 215, and i found myself using it a lot more off the tee on short par 4s and punching out of trees etc. I used it much more than i projected and i would deff. recommend it..

Try an MP-Fli Hi for your 3 iron spot. They seem to a pretty good tool to hit those long irons high for those of us who don't quite like the hybrids.

I think ahl3 did a great job, if not pick up a TM raylor or another rescue at 19 degrees...I hit mine over my 5 wood and love it. best of luck Sir
