MacG T945

Anyone know what a t945 MacG 1 wood is like? I just managed to get one (in need of a bit of a refurb) for 99p

Hi mate,
As far as I know the 945t came out in 1982 - it is similar to the Mac Muirfield you have in that it shoudl have an eye-o-matic face:
Here are the 945t stats from the 2nd ed Kaplan book for the 1982 entry:
- Standard face depth with wide overall size
- Eye-o-matic gace insert
- 10 deg loft
- stiff and regular Dynamic shaft
This should be a very nice more 'modern driver'. As you may have seen from my fbook posts the 945w was the classic Mac dirver of the 50's after the M85. Nicklaus used this model from 1976 to 89 - the original had a really deep face but I think your one is not so deep. Your one will have a good dynamic shaft in.

Thanks - yes i saw these also;
1986 i think - its hard to tell as the 82-83 sole plates are not visible in the book and the name is different usually being a 945... rather than ...945. There is one entry in 86 which has a sole plate similar to this. It was made with very good persimmon and sold under the 'classic' heading . It could have either a stiff or reg shaft (do you know?). It will have a heavier head than your Muirfield lite but both clubs were produced in the same year. I can't find any other year entry for this.

Seller seems to think that the Driver has a TT stiff. don't know what this will be like for my beginners swing (probably awfull) but I coudn't resist for £9 posted.

For £9 and your refurb skills I know it will come up roses. As for playing as a stiff shaft? This all depends on you. I think its great your learning/teaching yourself on classic equipment. If you did ever switch to modern in the future you will be finding the sweetspot every time. I combined modern with old drivers as I was growing up but would have benefited from taking the old out a bit more. Just swing it and see!

The 945 pictured in the ebay listing is the copy not the 50s' version

There were 3 models of the original 50s'945:

1953 model 945w had a red fiber 4 screw insert and a sweptback 4 screw soleplate that
read in script " Macgregor Tourney "

1954-55 model 945w had a red/white/red 6 screw eye-o-matic insert with a sweptback 4 screw solepate
that read in script " MacGregor Tourney with eye-o-matic in block letters in between the
words Macgregor Tourney

1956-57 model 945w had a wider red/white/red super-eye-o-matic 6 screw insert with a 5 screw butterfly soleplate
that read in block letters " SUPER eye-o-matic macgregor TOURNEY"

Obviously pictures are better but in their absence word descriptions will have to do... hope this helps

Here is a pic of the 1954 Tommy Armour 945 Eye O Matic. Probably the most rare persimmons of them all. Mac made this in Limited quantities. I had one, but sold it. Don't ask. I don't know why. It was very nice, I bought it from an older gentleman who was the orig. owner. The grain was insane and the Tommy Armour etching was a beautiful gold paint and the club was perfect. The only flaw was the bottom score line on the toe side was a little lower than the rest of it. Wish I still had it.

In the late 1980s Mac Made remakes, the 945W EOM being one of them. That club had only 3 score lines in the middle of the insert vs. 4 on the original.

That Mac T945 is a great driver. I also have one I picked up a few months ago. A very good friend of mine who is a PGA pro used one in the late 80s. I always like the one he had, so I was looking out for one. I like the head better than the Murfield that is like it.
