Hybrid Degree Help

13 Clubs, want to add a hybrid
I want to add a hybrid, but not sure what degree hybrid to add. I carry 3 - PW S59 Tours, driver, 15 degree 3 wood, 56 degree sand wedge and a 60 degree lob wedge. That equals 13 clubs, so I want to add a hybrid, since I have space. Should I add a 16 degree hybrid or a 19 degree hybrid? Note: I'm not kicking anything out of the bag to add both hybrids. My handicap is 8.

Hybrids usually replace a 3-iron and/or a 4-iron so I don't know why you'd keep those. I suppose you could kick your 3-wood down to a 13-degree and then add a 16-degree hybrid. Or, you can add another wedge. It just depends on whether or not there are any distance gaps in your bag or not. Personally, I'd ditch the 3-iron for a 19-degree.

You should definitely be leaning more toward an 18 or 19 degree hybrid. That should close the gap nicely between your 3W and your 3iron. Also, I'm not sure how locked you are into the 56/60 combination, but you might want to consider rethinking your loft set up. You currently have 9 degrees of separation between your PW and SW (Kevin Bacon only has 3 :) ). I swear by the 53/58 combo, while others have found happy mediums as well. JAT

the only gap you have is there between your 3-wood and 3 iron. obviously this is a spot for a 2-iron or 5 wood. i have used a 18* nike pro combo utility iron, 19* taylormade rescue dual tp, and 18* nike slingshot tour. i've had great results with them. more versatile, easier to hit and longer than a 2 iron, and more versatile and easier to hit than a 5 wood. i've extended the length of the shafts to get a little more distance out of them. it fits the yardage gap nicely for me.

i find the 16* to be a little stronger than what i wanted. its still shorter than a 3 wood, but it leaves a bigger gap than i would prefer after the 3 iron.

there is nothing saying you can only use a hybrid to replace the 3 and 4 iron. if that were the case, they wouldn't make hybrids between 14* and 19*.

Lot people said they got a big gap between iron 4 and hybird 3, or iron 3 and hybrid 2, etc..

How about just get a hybrid 3 (still keep your iron 3) to get the distance of iron 2? Even some pro did that (sorry I can not remember the name now.)

The only thing wierd is that you would get two clubs around 20 degree -- iron 3 and hybrid 3.

I actually carry a 1 iron hybrid to replace a 3 wood. I'm much more accurate with it and it really flies.

DRIVER:  Callaway Rogue ST 10.5

FAIRWAYS:  Callaway Rogue ST 3, 9, 11 Fairway Woods

HYBRIDS:  Callaway Big Bertha 3 Hybrid, Rogue ST 4 Hybrid

IRONS:  Callaway Rogue ST 4-AW

WEDGES:  Callaway Jaws Raw 50 S Grind, 54 S Grind, 58 Z Grind

PUTTER:  Odyssey Toulon Las Vegas

BACKUPS:  Odyssey Toulon Garage Le Mans Tri-Hot 5K Double Wide, MannKrafted Custom, Slighter Custom

BALL:  Testing

A man has to have options!

That's not weird at all. I'm currently playing a 20* heavenwood, and a 3 iron that is either 20* or 21*. Problem is, the Heavenwood is shafted w/ a X100, so whatever additional "soft landing" I would have gotten with the extra 2* of loft is negated by the boring trajectory (and lots of roll, this club is MUCH closer to my 3W in lenght than it is my 3iron). My thinking is an 18 with a hybrid shaft would fill the gap better, at least for me (in terms of distance management and usable trouble-shooting trajectory). Md 19 might be replacing the heavenwood before too long though, partially to support a sponsor, and partially b/c I have hardly read anything bad about that club.

I have been absolutely ecstatic about the Mizuno MP UX 2 hybrids I've had for quite a few months now, and I've played and demo'd LOTS of hybrids. It looks like your distance gap is between the 15 degree 3 wood and the 21 degree 3 iron. The MP UX2 in 17 (and/or 20) degrees just could be the ticket for you. My index runs around 10, +/-, and I can hit the 20 and 23 degree hybrids WAY more consistently than my 3 and 4 irons.

I love my 60 degree wedge and my 14th club was a 52 degree wedge, but I never used it. I am very comfortable with my PW, 56 and 60 set-up.

I carry a 19* Retro Raylor and 19* 2 iron...the clubs play entirely differently and the Raylor goes further than the 2 iron.
