spot on! i have been hitting hooks. this off-season i have been working on some feelings for my take-away which is shutting down the clubface as i turn.

now that my take away is in a better place i am going to work on letting the clubface flow more open at the the top so i can release the club through impact better...with (hopefully) less hooks.

i appreciate the feedback on the setup as well. definitely need to cover the ball better at address.

i love this community! thanks golfwrx!

Do you feel like you are laying you right wrist back too much?

I think that if you kept it a little firmer at the top of your swing instead of letting it drop back, you can get your club head to stay on the line as you go down and not have to flip your wrist through the shot to get square...

and as we figure what will happen with too much wrist... a snap hook

I'm working on keeping the club head on line too!
on my takeaway I always break my wrist too much and have to compensate at the top of my swing to get it back into position

nice positions though and lines!

i think i understand what you mean by laying my right wrist back too much. yes, i agree.

i feel that the only way to firm it up would be to bring my right elbow a touch closer to my body. your thoughts?

i would definitely like to be able to release more on on the follow through and minimize wrist flip.

so you tend to let your wrist breakdown up top, too? any drills or suggestions to firm it up?

thanks!

Good looking action with the exception being that the face could be more square and less shut at the top. Once you get the face square, you should not only reduce the hook miss but also pick up some distance because you will be able to go after it harder and release the club better. Great looking swing plane though.

I'll try to explain :)

so on the takeaway for me...
maybe a quarter into it when the club is at waist height if I look back at my club, the club head is too far behind my body ... thus it is to the left of my wrists if you are looking from the behind shot... meaning too much wrist break on the takeaway... so at the top of my swing, I need to reset the club head more to the outside... then on the downswing I must then re-compensate with the wrist action and sometimes snap hook
thus I am working on keeping the club head more on like by taking it back more or less straight back from the ball... so now the club head will be more outside... or to the right of my wrists (or atleast in line with them) looking from the behind shot... once I am at my waist area, then lifting the club head up with the rotation of the shoulders to get it set at the top of the back swing...

looking at your slow mo of the 6 iron shot it seems as if you do take away straight back behind the ball which is good... but looking at the club head when it's at your waist area you can see that it's a little too far to the inside or to the left of your wrists (on the behind shot)... which means your right wrist broke down and let the club head come too much inside a little too much... then as you keep on going back to the top of your swing that problem is magnified since now you turn your shoulders back and continue to the top the club head opens sky high ... trying to keep the club head more on a straight path on your back swing I think will help...

as far as drills the only thing I can think of is jacked from Michael Breed's golf fix... (prolly not how he described this drill either) ... but if this is feasible... get a right handed glove... and at the top of the wrist area, where you velcro it shut, wrap it with a tee, credit card, or business card... so it is sticking out of the bottom of the glove down your arm... so imagine at the top of your swing if your right wrist has broken too much and is too laid off, then the CC/tee will in turn dig into the top of your wrist/forearm... so pain as a reminder to keep your right wrist a little straighter at the top...

It's kind of hard to explain via written text but I hope this helps!!!

good luck

There is NOTHING WRONG with your takeaway. You have a fantastically natural swing.

The fact that the clubhead is closed at the top and is facing the sky is due to one thing only. Your grip.

You have an incredibly strong left hand grip. And I am astonished that I am the only one that has picked up on it. Duval like grip and swing.

So, I just took another look at your swing and I have to correct myself. Your takeway is perfect. Somehow you manage to keep the club bang on plane. Good job.

Sort your grip out and you will be golden. If you dont know what I mean, go see someone who does.

The grip will be a good start, then I would do some mirror work on getting the toe up and square when the shaft parallels the ground. Your balance looks good based off your finish, but it looks like you have some tension due to trying to steer it and probably hit a big ole block every now and then. Once you square it up and release the tension your swing will be even more fluid, don't get discouraged if you hit spray it like a sprinkler for a week or two.

Wonderful rhythm and tempo. Nice posture. But...

You don't turn your right shoulder behind you, so face on, you can see your right elbow below your left arm from halfway back in the backswing. I'll bet your left arm dominates your swing - you look really tense with it and so the left shoulder abducts beneath the chin but the right shoulder is disconnected, you're not really turning your shoulders enough. It looks to me that you are also way too quick with the body. I bet you used to block it right, then moved the ball way too far forward to compensate? Otherwise, the arms are left behind and if you hit the ball from the proper ball position it'd block because they have even less time to catch up with the body and get stuck behind your hips. Then I reckon you strengthened your left hand to stop the straight right shots and now hold it closed, which has caused you to hook it now as a bad shot.

Move the ball back with the driver - inside your left heel

Keep your hands level with the inside of your left thigh on every club. With the driver, the shaft will be straight up and with the irons your hands will be just to the left of the ball slanting the shaft slightly left. Visually, it will look like the shaft is slanting way left when you look down at your set-up if your hands are only slightly ahead. That's fine - it's an optical illusion.

Weaken that left hand grip to neutral

Your head is tilted to the right too much on the driver - your chin points at the ball and not between your feet

Allow the club to open - it'll actually be going to square but will feel wide open. Cocking it more vertically will help you get a squarer blade at the top as well

Start the down swing with an arm swing down and out and then let the body follow the arms and pick up momentum - the arms an club have further to travel - like ten feet or so, the hips only have about 6". They need to catch up and be more synchronised with your body turn, which is racing ahead

When you practice, make 3 full backswings, feeling the club being allowed to open (as opposed to manipulating it open) and then swing through to a quarter-follow through, fully releasing the club, then a half-follow through fully releasing, then a full swing and really feel it release. At about 6/10 of your maximum tempo.

toshman...that's funny man....no, i actually video'ed at gaylord springs by opryland.....nice eye though.
david c.....great post and a fairly accurate description of my progression based on a very short clip of my swing....bravo!

i have actually spent three days working on a more neutral grip, "covering" the ball in my set up, and releasing the club.

my ball position has shifted back (i.e driver is now inside my left foot) because i am releasing the club more with my arms/shoulders than with my body....strange how a small thing like grip affects the whole swing. with my old strong grip i had to release with body/hip turn....now i can start down with my arms first and release them more as i turn through the ball without fear of a quick snap hook.

misses are high, right spinners now....it'll just take some time to adjust for sure. well struck shots are flying slightly higher and curving less. the whole swing feels more relaxed.

it's time to regrip as well so i am actually going to put ribbed grips on an build my new grip around having a reminder. we'll see how that goes......

once again, this has been incredible feedback! big thanks to all who have chimed in!
