Garmin G5 vs Skycaddie sgx

I just ordered the Garmin G5 from Amazon but i have been reading a lot about the new Skycaddie sgx, should i return my G5 for the sgx? I owned a Upro before and didn't care much for the navigation controls and have always found the G5 to be a better fit for me. I was reading about the smart club technology coming out for the sgx and i really like that idea but i don't want what upro did to their customers to happen to me with Skycaddie (promises of new software for stat traking).

I've always been a skycaddie guy. It's just what I found when I first started looking into gps 4 years ago. No other reason. I upgraded to the sgx last week as the old gps was starting to wear out. But I'll tell you from what I've seen of the G5 online, (I've never seen one in person) it looks pretty darn good. It looks like the sgx and g5 are very very close in features right now.

I think the sgx has some room to grow and become the premium unit on the market when the smart tags come. And I do believe that they will. They've had a pretty shaky roll out of the sgx, but in the past they've been pretty good about following through with the updates they've promised.

The program that I bought to track my score on my iphone from skygolf has already been updated twice with features I asked about. So I find that pretty encouraging.

But it ultimately comes down to what you think you want more than anything else. Just like buying new clubs. When you look at them at address, you better be in love with them, because you bought em, you have to use em, and they just seem to work better when you love to look at em. I think the gps units are the same!!! Good luck

got em both......g5 is simplier to use however, i get different yardages due to pin location due to the fact you have to manually adjust for along with back center front........however, g5 has holevue for every course I play. Skycaddie will get there soon. g5 for now as it is easlier to use.

Had original SG and SG4_POS_, and then got the Garmin. Plug it in and go. It keeps score, stats, waterproof adn easily seen in sunlight.... Oooh and no yearly fees!

Something that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere but found while messing around with my G5--if you're computer savvy you can download your tracks from the unit. There are some online programs that will put your tracks onto a google map and show you how far you walked, how fast, elevation change, etc.

Based on the ease of use of the G5 and the problems people are experiencing with the SGX, I'm leaning towards getting the G5.

Selling my G5 for the SGX. NOTHING wrong with the G5, I like it and its indestructible, I had yardage issues at some of the course I played for team play. It wasn't only the G5, other folks that use the imagery yardages were up to 15 yards off at some of the courses.


With Skycaddy walking the courses, none of our members with Skycaddies had any yardage discrepancies.

SGX isnt perfect yet, I think they rushed it and the software isnt perfect yet. I had 2 reboots today.

I used my G5 in a scramble yesterday and loved it. Cant get any easier to use then the Garmin G5. I wasnt real familiar with the course so I cant comment on any distance issues. I have no complaints on the G5 so far...

I took my SGX back for a refund, it crashed and locked up too much. I have the SG5 which works great. Maybe when they fix the SGX, i will give it another try.

I love the G5, very easy to use, all touch screen and no subscription fees each year. Has an excellent score card feature where it will store your cards on the unit and you can print them out later if you wish. The SGX has some interesting features if they every release them. I got burnt on my UPRO as Callaway constantly said they were releasing cool features but never did. They also never released more courses as they promised. Buy a GPS for what it can do today, not what it MIGHT do later...

Just pulled the trigger on a Approach G5. Can't wait to get it and try it out on the course.

Enjoy the G5.

Like others said above it is very easy to use. No distractions. No messing with buttons and the touch screen. I found some discrepancies on a couple of courses and emailed Garmin about it. They were appreciative and will look into them.

I also found a wierd course that wasn't mapped correctly and reported it to Garmin. Got an email (looked personalized not a form) thanking me for sending them the incorrect data.

BTW, if any of you have a G5 and golf Desert Canyon in Fountain Hills AZ, the GPS has the course laid out right but have the nines backwards on the scorecard. Very confusing...
