What would you do in this situation?

I understand your logic but would not have tee'd off. This same thing happened to my group last weekend and what we did was called the pro shop and they sent the marshall out to deal with the situation. They were a twosome and come to find out that they grabbed a cart and didn't even pay for green fees. Needless to say they were escorted off the course. Cooler heads prevailed and we still got our round done in 3:45. Overall not a bad day.

Well I think mostly I woulda laughed it off, b/c the guy was clearly confused or just a moron. I can tell you what I wouldn't have done. Hit a ball. What if it hit him in the head by some chance? Then where would you be?

I would think that he would take a few minutes to play on and get out of your way as a single in a cart. Cool out a little and let him play on.

The liability that you assume when you hit the ball with any intention of hitting someone certainly could be a financial ruin as well as a lot of legal grief. Not worth it at all. Your actions do speak of a hot temper and one day you might find out the results of that luxury.

I witnessed a similiar situation on a course that I play a lot as we were stacked up on a neighboring tee box and watching.. Some younger guy got hot at the group in front of his group for some unknown reason and drove his tee shot into the group, hitting a large man in the back on the first hop. They had a heated discussion out in the fairway when the younger guy threw a punch at the large man and missed. The large man did not miss and the young guy was motionless for a few minutes on the turf. We all broke out laughing and then wondering if the young hot head was ok. He did get up and went into the club house, finished for the day. We checked into the clubhouse to talk to the pro to act as witnesses if needed and the pro only mentioned that he came complaining of not feeling good. End of story.

I guess the point of that story was don't hit a golf ball at a large man!!!! No matter how tough you think you are there is someone else out there tougher and a temper may write a check that you can't cash.

Hitting that ball was a real A-hole move. Now you're the bad guy. NOTHING ever warrants that type of action. It almost sounds like you are trying to brag that he only hit it 220 and left while you deep throated it 280...BTW, that's 60 yards past him, not 100, Tiger. What would I have done? Call the pro shop. Let them handle it. I've stopped heated situations before they got too bad and I've called the cops and suspended memberships as well. As I told two of our 30+ year old hotheads out here just a week ago, if you want to fight, take it behind the bleachers after lunch period...or you could just grow the eff up, be a man, and deal with it like an adult. But that's just me.

To the OP: Very bad bit of "course rage" to hit over the guy, even if he was off to the side, etc.

Take out the scorecard and your phone and call the proshop and demand that they immediately get the guy off the hole. This has happened to me twice (twosomes both times in carts while we were walking). I very politely tell the proshop that I would like a marshal out there immediately to get the guys off the hole.

If they cut in front of you and there was a group in front of them, that is very bad, since it means your end time is delayed 15 minutes. They don't know whether or not that is a big deal to you. Maybe you are just going to drink beer for an hour, but maybe you have to get your kid from school, so they cannot cut in front of you. However, if you hit a ball at someone, you might end up in a very bad spot indeed. He could have called the proshop and had you kicked off the course. They were probably laughing about it to your face, but they were definitely thinking something else.
