I think it depends on where the kid wants to play golf in college. If it's D-I, especially major conferences, they're looking for more national success. In D-II, D-III, state tourneys are a very good measure for what kind of player a kid is. It's usually the most pressure a high school golfer finds himself under, at least in Minnesota it was. AJGA is something a lot of kids just can't do, not because of talent, but because of money and time. Costs a lot for a high school kid to be flying around the country playing in tourneys all summer. I know I wasn't interested at that age. Like I said though, in D-I I agree with you completely.

I played in mine (MO) a week and a half ago. I played AWFUL. The conditions were bad. The course had had about 3 inches of rain in the past 3 days and it was sloppy. Anyway I started out with 45 on the back (started on 10), I just couldn't make a par. I pulled myself together on my back 9 for about 7 holes. I was +2 (not great but better) and I got an plugged lie in the face of the bunker on 8 and made double. Then, through a few awful kicks, hops and tough conditions, I made 11, yes, 11, on the last hole to shoot 90. It was humiliating. The second day, I went out and went par, par, 10, bogey, triple, bogey, double, par, par on the back 9. Then I pulled myself together and went birdie, bogey, par, par, par, par, bogey (good bogey after being stuck behing a tree), double (stupid aggression), par. I shot 85 the second day. It was bad, but I was there as a freshman, I guess I shouldn't complain.

It's really no problem if you aren't playing in the national junior tournaments like AJGA or MGA or anything like that. Of course it would help with your game and mental stability, but if for some reason you can't whether it be travel reason or financial reasons, It's really not a big deal. Playing NAIA or D3 or D2 is perfectly ok. Golf becomes such an individual sport that if you play really well you will get attention. I know it helps if your on the national level, but you can do it other ways.

national junior tournaments like MGA.... wth is MGA.
But thats true, state high school tournaments are very low priority to college coaches. They just add to the resume of the top players of the AJGA and independent national events. Just try and work on the game, and focus on the positives. It will pan out. You are only a freshman and have a lot of time. Have fun with it!

I appreciate the support. I'm not worried about it. I was sick and was playing on a bad left Achilles. Honestly, if it was an individual competition, you would've seen a "WD" next to my name. I don't have any national tourneys on my schedule this year, but I'm doing some regional and state stuff. I hope to play in some bigger tournaments next year...Mike

MGA = the qualifiers for national amateurs like the US Open/Us amateur in the Tri State Area, before you flame maybe you should actually read and click on the link given above. Did you or do you even play college golf?

I think AJGAs are overrated. Any tournament is good, and the coach is an idiot if he ignores it. And to those people who say state tournaments arent important. Pretty sure the medalist of the Ohio State tourny, gets a full ride to OSU guaranteed. That's pretty nice, and doesn't sound like a joke to me. All tournys are important, even your club championships.

 • 5 weeks later...

MGA is not near as national as the AJGA, or even the PJGT for that matter. It's more for the northeast part of the country such as NY or NJ. Don't get me wrong, the MGA probably hosts some great tournaments, but it would be absolutely crazy for a midwestern kid like myself to make a trip up to New York for a two-day.

That being said, the AJGA is probably important for recruiting purposes, but as long as you're playing competitive golf somewhere and you're playing well, it shouldn't matter where you play - if you're good enough coaches will find you.

As said above...if you are on a budget:

1. Play your State golf association Jr Golf Championship. Some states have qualifiers...some have one big tournament.
2. Play in your state Amat. Qualifier and State Am if you qualify.
3. Play in U.S. Jr and U.S. Am Qualfiers
4. If not a member of a priv. course, play in the U.S. Public Links Qualifer.
4. Play in local area Jr and Am qualifiers.
5. Most states have a jr tour...as do some cities

I think the first poster lives in Kansas check out:

Fall College Preview Series:

Most college coaches want to see 36+ hole tournaments, but if you consistently play well they pay attention.
