Can you tip trim a .355 tapered tip iron shaft?

I just like to know since I was looking to buy a set of Project x's that are 1/2" long and instead of trimming the butt I would trim the tip to make it a little stiffer. I know the Px site says no tip trimming but has anyone done this with success?

A couple things here.

First of all, with some clubheads you can tip the shafts [b]1/4"[/b] and still be safe. You definitely can't go the full 1/2" though. It's really not an issue as to what kind of shaft it is as most of them taper the same. It would all depend on how tight they currently fit into the hosel. You won't know this until you pull, prep and reinsert. If they're pretty tight already it's a risky proposition to take anything off the tip. But if there is some wiggle room, you might be OK. BUT, you still want a tiny bit of wiggle room so you have enough space to get a good epoxy bond.

Another potential issue is the swingweight. Are you happy with the current swingweight at 1/2" long? Because if so, then when you cut these down, no matter if you tip trim or butt cut, 1/2" will make them 3 sw points lighter. And if you plan on using tip weights you need to factor those in on the finished length as well as they can add 1/8" or up to 1/4" to the finished length. So basically, if you tip them 1/4", then add a tip weight, you may end up only taking 1/8" or so off. Not really worth it if that's the case.

Are you really just trying to save the grips? Cause let me tell you, it's not worth ruining a set of PX shafts to save the grips. Especially if you really want them the full 1/2" shorter. Just pull the grips and butt trim if that's the case.

Thanks for the good info. I knew that It would not work because of the tapered tips. I did not want to save the grips I wanted to make them stiffer. I also heard that having the Px longer actually makes them feel a little stiffer. I will leave them as how they are. Thanks again for the info.

The only reason I asked about saving the grips was because I had once considered doing that! I had purchased a set of irons w/ PX shafts that were 1/4" long, and they had a fresh set of multi-compounds on them. I'm telling you, just the thought of cutting off brand new grips was so painful. So I did consider tipping them that 1/4" just to save them. But I'm glad I didn't, it's just not worth it when the shafts are far more costly to replace.
