Typical distances

Recommended Posts

I just added a 3 strong to my repertoire, and so now I'm thinking of maybe taking out the 4 wood and putting a 5 wood in it's place. Typically how far do the following go???

3 strong wood:

5 wood:

7 wood:

I know this is a relative question, but humor me.

Should I take out the 4 wood or keep her in???

in my experience, I can hit a 3 alot further than a 4. My 3 will go 230-250, but my 4 only goes 190-210. If this is the case, keep it. However, if you hit a four within 20yrds of your 3, take it out and put in a 5 (or drop the 3). Depends on the courses your playing. IE, if your course is tight - play the 3 and use it off the tee on some of the tighter fairways. If the course is wide open and the par fives are short (and if you crush your driver 300+), then you can play without a 3. Right now, I play 2 woods a driver and a 4 wood, but my course is wide open and short par 5s, even if i top a drive i will still get 200-240 yrds out of it and only have about 200-250 to the green on the par 5s. Another thing to look at is the par 4s, Ive played some courses that have 3 par fours under 300, therefore I cant use the driver, so I dust off the 3 and use it to drive on short and/or tight courses. I think club selection depends on the course, for instance I play 4 wedges b/c my course has a variety of trouble spots around the greens. I have my flop wedge, my bump and run wedge, my pin seeker, and the standard fairway wedge. Damn, Im an airbag, LOL.

You will probably have a slight gap between your strong 3 and 5 wood - but hat doesn't mean you need to fill the gap. It depends on a lot of things. For example, if you're a longer hitter, you probably wont find yourself hitting many fairway woods anyways. If you're a short hitter, you'll probably be hitting a lot of 3+'s just to advance it down the fairway as far as possible.

Do as phil did this week. Play your course a few times and record how often you hit each club - also record when you needed a different club. Then decide which woods are more important.

I hope you didn't get rid of that lob wedge from yesterday's posts. That's one mistake I've made too often: I've sold a clubs, looking to make a change...only to wish later that I'd held on to it. Specifically, of the dozen or so clubs I've sold over the years... there are three (a 3+wood, and two wedges) that I really wish I still had around. Each of those three clubs I had had reshafted for me, cut to the perfect length, adjusted swingweights...and then sold to 2nd Swing. There was nothing wrong with those clubs, they performed fine for me, I was just looking to adjust my yardage gaps.

Perhaps the lob wedge from yesterday was a club that you were actually struggling with, so in that case it is probably ok to sell it. But with your 4-wood, if you're only looking to adjust yardage gaps, do yourself a favor and hold onto it for a while. Especially if you already have it set up the way you like it.

I think the gap between a standard 3 wood and a 5 wood is a nice gap (~20 yards if shafts are the same material)...likewise, I think a 3+ and 4 wood go nicely together. Especially if you have a 3+ wood with a graphite shaft (longer standard), and your 4+ wood has a steel shaft (shorter standard). That's the setup I'm considering going back to right now.

Yes, I let 'er go. The truth is, I just couldn't hit it. I tried to chip in the yard, the range, everywhere and I still couldn't get it right. I figure why give a club a free ride if it's not gonna benefit me and only to collect dust. So I made use of it and traded it, i really wanted the 3+ Cobra X-Speed, but I got what I hit the best, and Golf Galaxy didn't have one. I like graphite in my woods, so I'll stick to that, I think this is gonna work out well, if it doesn't I can order the X-Speed.

I'm a club ho as you can see, I just want to experiment. I have had a kink in my driver as of late, so maybe this will be a second option.
