First Swing Video - Driver (Down the Line and face on)

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I was briefly trying "stack & tilt" points (probably a bad idea as I've had no instruction and reading off the internet just left me more confused than when I started), so I already know about how bad my right leg straightens out.... I went back out to the range today and went back to the swing I'd "taught" myself which I will post soon (Western NY is coooold right now). It's more "conventional" and after reading SliceFixers Encyclopedia Texarcana, is more of what my swing is going for (but still a long way away from!)

However I did want go get some additional tips for any glaring weaknesses you notice in my swing.

Down-the-Line

Face-on

Thanks!

Try keeping your feet straight, and parallel to each other, rather than being outwards. Also, on your back swing on a few of your shots, bring your right foot around a little more, as your laces should be facing forward.

Hope that helped.

Hi Brandon, thanks for the reply. When you say keep my feet straight and parallel to each other, do you mean don't flare my feet outwards? I can't turn my hips very much if they are both aligned perpendicular to the target line, or is that the point (are you saying I'm turning too much?) I'm not super flexible (can't quite turn my shoulders 90 degrees to my hips) so I figured I needed some flare to give myself more turn.

And sorry, but I don't understand what you mean about bringing my "right foot around a little more" on the backswing, could you elaborate?

In the first vids, it looks like you are coming over the top. Your hands are too far out away from you about halfway thru your downswing. In the face on vid, you can see you really trying to pull them back to the ball at the bottom.

Hi drugdawg,

How do I keep them "closer" to my body on the downswing? I definitely have the feeling I come over-the-top, but don't quite understand what I'm doing in the backswing to set it up, I'm assuming I shouldn't have to make such compensations with my arms if I'm setup correctly and... turning? I guess is the feeling I'm going for.

Watch your hand path on the frontal shots. They take the same path towards the ball that they did on the backswing. Essentially, your downswing is more or less a shoulder turn back to the ball. This puts the clubhead outside the proper path. You are instinctually pulling the clubhead back inside to the ball at the bottom. The hands should trace a tighter arc on the way down. They trace a big C on the way back. That is fine. It creates a big arc for a full shoulder turn and potential power. On the move down, pull the butt of the club towards the ball with the feeling that you are going to backhand the ball with your left hand. This will help to drop it in the proper slot and maintain the proper left wrist angle longer. This will help you maintain the lag longer and not flip at the ball.

In your second video I am noticing that your takeaway with the driver is on plane coming back, but when you get to the top your hands raise slightly and this makes your downswing come over the top of the ball. My suggestion would be to try to think about hitting the inside quarter of the ball like you are trying to start it out right. This will keep your hands inside the target line, and will also keep you from standing up as you get to impact.

I may be wrong, but I think that Brandon meant for you to get the laces facing down the line in your follow-through, Your hips don't completely turn toward the target.
