The 4th Annual Weekend Before The Masters All California Interboard Golf Outing RECAP

Recommended Posts

Owen Hanson (incepta)and I met Coldfeet at Avila Beach GC thursday for a 2:08 tee time. The course was in fairly poor condition. That area has an average annual rainfall of 9" and they have recieved 18" already this year so the condition problems were understandable to a point but avila was rougher than needed. Greg and Owen played well and I struggled to find a swing. Thommy and nelson met us at the house and we all went to Juans Mexican restaurant for dinner. The house idea worked out great, there was plenty of room for everyone without feeling crowded and it was across a small alley from the beach, the sound of the waves crashing was nice. It was very clean with everything you might need.

Day 2: Went to Monarch and had breakfast in their grill which has great food and played the par 3, 12 hole "challenge" course 3 times with guys arriving throughout the day. I used a half lob wedge up to a 3 wood on this track. It is called the "challenge" course for a very good reason. It will definitly tune things up or make you crazy. I started to find a swing and played better. Got back to the house, cleaned up and went to Guiseppe,s in Pismo for dinner, wineguy,Orangebang, Kenny, Kent, Steve Almo, Mel, Richard, DaveT319, Doug and his foursome from FGI met us there. Buy now we had 17 at dinner. I had the Oso Bucco (most of us did) lamb shank and as always it was great. The hostess could easily be centerfold in next months Playboy, smokin, drop jaw hot.

Day 3: Got up early to make our way down to Cold Springs Tavern for breakfast off the 154 near lake Cachuma in the middle of nowhere. It was built in the 1860s and has been continually in business since in the original board and batton buildings, the food was excellent, I had the homeade buffalo, and venison sausage omlette with biscuits and gravy, superb. Then we made the short jaunt over to Rancho San Marcos GC which has had glowing reveiws since opening in the 90s. But, again due mostly to the rain, it was rough and didnt show its best side. Owen drove the par 4 3rd, 374 into the wind and birdied with a easy 2 putt. Very shaggy greens which are normally very fast and smooth, thick, spotty rough and very little run out on the fairways made for a long day. I played poorly but hit same solid shots. we made the trek back to the house in time to sit for a minute or two the get ready for Jocko's. I had the large spencer extra cut (40 oz.) with all the trimmings. This place is a definite bucket list contender, the steak was as good as any steak anywhere and far far better than most, the enourmous size is just a bonus.

Day 4:Got to Monarch for our closing round at 8 and were the second group off. Larry (wick) brought us the worlds best cinnamon rolls from the place in Pismo and they were awesome with the butter cream frosting. owen was throwing darts with his irons but his driver was off which can be a problem when you hit it 400 yards. I surprised myself and had a decent swing for the first time in weeks but for some reason I had lost a club of distance. many of the greens have false fronts and I was short several times watching the ball roll back down from the fringe. The course was in good condition compared to anything else we had played but still didnt play as designed. It is a semi links style track and due to the wetness, it was long and all carry instead of being able to run shots up like you normally can. Still my favorite course of all time though. I managed to go 41, 41 for a 82 which I can live with all things considered. last year I shot 75 which is my lowest round there yet.

Five boards were represented with 2 WRX'ers (tigermark and pinhigh71) Most of these guys only see each other this one time per year and it is alway good to see them. The turnout was a little less than expected but still we had a total over the 4 days of 26. A good time was had by all and the outing was a success again. It is a great group of guys and hopefully more of you will be able to attend in the future.

Sound like a great time. I grew up in Goleta/ Santa Barbara and Cold Springs Tavern is a one of a kind place. Freat food and Atmosphere.
Don't know if Mattie's Tavern is still operating in Los Olivos, but it's a cool restruant as well. Brought back some memories reading your post.

Sounds like it was a great time. Your description of the meals eaten each evening has left me with a large puddle of drool on my shirt!!!!! That 40 oz. steak sounds like the offspring from the "Ole 96er" that John Candy ate in The Great Outdoors.

I am sure one of the guys will be posting pics of the food soon. the steaks are incredible. The Oso Bucco is just as good and the cinnamon rolls are sinful.

Matties was run by the Charthouse bunch, but they always had a different menu and atmosphere. Very cool old house/tavern. Once was a stage stop like Coldsprings Tavern.
Man, now I want to go home for a visit......Maybe this fall.
