PGA Bag Pic questions...

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone knew what Rich Beem's irons were? They look like MacGregors with the hallmarks gouged out!

Also, in both threads, there are pictures of Cobra blades. Are they Poulter's or Ogilvy's? They're adjacent to some Poulter pictures, but I'm not sure. Also, they don't look much like any Titleist blades. They're obviously custom, but are they based on any particular model?

Thanks for the great pics!

Beem's may just be hogans with a ton of lead tape pounded on them. Poulter and Ogilvy's blades are a die that was licensed from MacGregor and forged by Endo. There are 5 sets in existance and according to the higher ups that will be all--just not a market Cobra wants to enter--they will stick with soft cast irons like the new CB--which will also probably be the end of the forged CB. Poulter, Na, Ogilvy have sets (I'm assuming the others are held for J.B. and Camillo if they want them). Cobra had to produce a players blade to attract these guys to play Cobra and didn't want them to have a bag full of Titleist (which they do anyway--fairways, wedges, putters) so they used the dies that MacGregor had designed and weren't being used (since macgregor lost their minds and went with the japanese hollow stuff) to produce a nice looking blade. It took them a while to also get their guys to use Cobra drivers which didn't happen until they were able to produce a long hoseled X-Speed for the tour (to take weight out of the sole and allow the face angle to bent). Some of the Cobra guys are using the CBs (Camillo but J.B. went back to the Titleists recently). Their staff bag will be black and yellow not the pink and white ones you are seeing at the British and PGA. Those are one of a kinds that won't be offered at retail---similar to Callaway's seasonal bags. To date only the Taylor Mades are available.

Certainly has been a great year for the bag manufacturer(s) producing goofy and good looking bags.

Thanks for the great info.

Wouldn't they have more than 5 sets (loss, theft, damage, extra sets for the guys that use them)? Also, weren't some of them for Poulter, or was that Ogilvy's bag?

Beem's irons are Hogans? I thought they might be either the older Hogans or Macs, but the scalloping on the back looked like the MadGregor V-Foils to me.

I've been looking at some of the threads re Daly's irons in addition to the pictures of his irons from the PGA. Does anyone know if Dunlop made those RG Design blades (which appear to also be the same club as the TM-badged ones in the pictures); or were they made for Dunlop by someone else? Does 'RG' stand for something in particular? There's not much info out there on these (forged?, which alloy 1020/1025/8620 etc.) They are still a very nice, simple design and the RG blades are pretty cheap.

Thanks.

Sandy, is this what you are talking about? because i see that Geoff Ogilvy's driver has one of the sole weights out, or at least it appears to be that way... is this a "tour" customization of the driver? taking weight out of the toe to make the driver play different?
