Putter Wells In New Golf Bags

I'm looking for a new golf bag that would be suitable for a push cart as well as a riding cart. After researching this forum as well as having a speed cart, it made sense to get the Sun Mountain bag made for these carts. After looking at the SCB and MCB, I noticed that the putter well is above where the woods would be stored. This seemed odd so while at the store, I got some woods and put a putter similar to one that I have in the putter well. As I suspected, the putter head would bang against the graphite shaft of the driver if in a push/pull cart. Even standing upright as in a riding cart, the putter head could easily bang against the driver shaft. I just don't get the reasoning for the position of where they are putting the putter keeping in mind these bags are meant for the push/pull carts positioning the putter at the very top above the woods with the bag leaning in a forward position. Other bag manufacturers are also doing the same thing. Am I missing something here? On another note, the MCB has some rather firm/hard rubber around the putter well and down through the club dividers beside the sections where the woods would go. I would think that this also would not be good for rubbing against graphite shafts. I'm thinking that I now have to look elsewhere for a suitable cart bag.

No your not missing anything. I noticed also that the lowest spot on some bags is on top if used in a push cart.

Sun Mountain C-130? I use one and keep my headcovers on my woods.

I like being able to remove the driver head cover and leaving it off for the entire round. In my current bag, the driver head does not come in contact with the other clubs. Judging by the design of the where the putter is put in the SCB and MCB, it's obvious they were designed for the riding cart and not the push carts as Sun Mountain indicates.

The C-130 has a putter well. It would be on top when on a push/pull cart and facing outward when on a power cart. The woods, on the C-130, were designed to go at the opposite side of the bag from the putter, and the wedges in the four slots next to the putter well.

If I left my headcovers off my woods, the 5 & 6 irons would be in contact with the shafts in either type of cart.

Exactly. That is why they make those things. While one is certainly free to take the headcovers off during a round, if you do I would think you would understand that some damage might occur. Kind of like using "protection" during certain activities.

From my experience I haven't seen a cart bag that worked well with both riding and push. You wind up having to make a compromise somewhere because you're accessing the opposite sides of the bag depending on the application. The only one that comes close that I've seen is one that had a separate putter tube off to the side. It had a base system that elevated each row of clubs so they wouldn't get in each others way. Still when I switched from push to riding I had to rearrange all of the clubs because of having to access the bag from opposite sides.
