Classic Blade Mizuno's and Wilson Staff FG59

No not a new debate and I am also not interested in advise not to play blades, when my swing is lost ...... I have an old (25 yrs old) set of Wilson Staff Tour Blades I actually hit better than any cavity back ....... besides for me playing blades is for fun ........ I really don't care much if I loose 25 yds on a bad shot, but like to be rewarded for a great shot ...... that is kind of what I miss in the modern tools ...... almost no loss in a slight mishit (that is fine), but also no rewards from a great shot ....... I know it is hard to explain !

I played MP57 last year, not too bad, but I wouldn't call these blades (compared to the above Wilsons), they are more like a players cavityback to me .......

I am not so familar with the older MP models, but there must be a few that are more blade like or more of a musscleback.

The MP68 looks terrific, but I am more looking for an older model, not wanting to spend another small fortune, so thinking of the more traditional or conventional series of a few years ago, but which models ?

I am also interested in the Wilson FG 59, but there isn't a lot of info on these to be found ........

I dont like Mizuno's usually, but just yesterday i got a worn out set of MP-14's to refinish because they are such a bad@$$ set of blades. One of my best friends played the FG-51's and wants my MP-14's after they are refinished and i'm done messing with them. He likes them so much more than the Wilsons and so do I.

The MP 9, 11, 14, 29 are all pretty classic blade styles. I demoed both the 14's and 29's way back when and preferred the 29s. Don't remember why. Just make sure to get the lofts checked since, if I recall correctly, the 29's and 14's had different lofts for the same clubs.

Demo'ed the FG62's (with TT S300) today. Fantastic iron. Very traditinal looking blade. Loved the crispness and the forged feel, but what really got me interested was the distance consistency. Such precision instruments. Couldn't believe how well I was hitting them. Went and got the 4i to try snap myself out of it, but to no avail. I was hitting that just as well. And I'm usually pretty lousy with the long irons. Maybe just one of those days, dunno. But be sure to at least give them a try!

I have heard alot of great things about the 62's and, they look amazing. I have hit the 62's just for fun and i loved them,i literally could not feel anything when i hit them pure,it was absolute nothingness. Even tho they are blades i have to say they were pretty forgiving, much more forgiving than i thot they would be and i actually hit them good and that was very suprising. Go to www.wilson .com/golf and read the reviews on w/s's website about the 62's,they have got very great reviews. Atleast demo them first,if there is a edwin watts close to you they have all of W/S clubs, including the 62's.

Same here I've tried a lot of clubs in the last few years, but still play my '82 FG-51's. I really want to like the newer clubs, and they hit very nice, just haven't found any better. None of the newer irons really stood out to me. Driver's now, that's a different story.

Another vote for MP-14s. I bought a set on eBay a few years ago in very lightly played condition, 2-PW, for about $290 shipped. They looked like they'd been played 4-5 rounds tops. I found them after only about 2 months watching eBay closely for a nice set. There were a lot of MP-14s made over a long period of time so fortunately there are plenty of them out there and good sets can still be had. Great club. Feels and plays beautifully. I love the weaker, old school lofts. The PW is 50* an it's my favorite club in the bag. Even though I'm always looking the only current clubs that catch my eye are Scratch SB-1s and also the recent Wilson blades. But every time I look at the price tag I can't convince myself I'll get something that I actually like or play more than what I already have in the MP-14s.

Thanks for all comments !

I pulled the trigger on a near new set of MP-67 this afternoon with Project X 6.0, which looks to be going to be my normal set to play.

The old Wilson Staff I still use now and then are a set of 1986 (when I bought them brandnew) Fluid Feel Tour Blades, but I will also look for a MP-14 set if I can find one that is nice. Apex PC and/or Apex are also high at my wishlist. (as old blades are almost for free ...... I am always keen on Miura and oyher small companies sets if I bump into them, I just visit lots of shops ..... at first they ask little fortunes for them, but after a year nobody even looking at them, they can be a bargain)...... one of the shops overhere is selling the FG59 like new for about $250 ..... we'll see........
