Alas! I made a decision

went back in technology...but now I'm thinking 980F

The other day I put out a post asking the general question..."if you had a choice between a hiBore and a 983K what would you take?" or at least it was something along that line.

Well I made up my mind. I went with the Titleist 983K in 9.5* of loft (got it for $70 CDN). I'm going to have to change the shaft seeing that it is coming with a Aldila NV in a R flex measuring 44". Perhaps in the technology race I went backwards. But, between what posters said here and from reviews I have read this choice seems like it was a good one. To everyone that gave me input...thanks.

Out of curiousity, does anyone still use the 980F? If so how is that fairway wood? I've seen that these are going for a song as well. I've read favourable reviews... but I like to know what fellow wrx'ers think.

I too play a 983k 9.5* w stock Speeder S flex. Since I was hitting the 983k so well, I decided to go for a 980F 4 wd with the stock DG S300. For some reason I would never get the club to fade...good shots were 5 yd draws while poor swings resulted in un controllable hooks. Distance was great but I decided to move on to a TM 200 4 wd. Loving the 200 so far... Maybe over the winter I may re-shaft the 980F with a 75g V2.

Viva 983K. I love mine. Just bought another "in case" 9.5%, speeder stiff (Titleist) same specs.

 

With the fairway woods I have stuck with my 975s

 

13.5 stiff EI70 shaft

16.5 reg EI70 shaft

20.5 reg EI 70 shaft

 

I don't have all woods in the bag at the same time as I have a choice of two hybrids & 4 wedges.

 

Still, when I hit these well they are great. When I hit them ok, I get away with it. When I put a bad swing on it I pay the price and deserve to.

 

The good shots are just that. They rocket off the face. I hit them straight or with a slight draw when playing well.

 

983K puts it in play more often than not. Im not interested in 10 more yards . The woods get it home.

The 13.5% off the tee on tight holes.

I had the 980F/S300 a couple years ago. Kinda Jeckyl & Hyde because of it's severely curved leading egde. Might dig really badly one shot, be just fine the next. I found the 904F to be an easier to live with club personally. The 906 is easier yet. If you want a good 3 wood at an attractive price, I'd reccommend looking at the 904F. Titleist Speeder shaft works well for me in the 904F. I have the 17º with that shaft and it hits high and long.
