Coming over the top with my downswing???

High handicapper here. I'm still trying to make a sweeping action with my golf swing. My normal fault is my hands are getting ahead of the turning of my body. I also notice i have a lot of upper body movement that I should try to minimize..

 

Any more thoughts from the experts here?

You need to work on your wrist hinge. You have the club really laid off and are forcing your self to steepen it on the way down.

Here are two drills you can try that will help you with proper wrist hinge.

First thing I noticed is your shoulders being very open. Posture is solid besides this. I fight this tendency as well, and it causes me to spin out and come over the top. Try to make sure your feet knees hips and shoulders are all pointing parallel right of your target.

Looks to me as if you're leaving your arms behind on the downswing. I suspect you cast the club also. Your weight transition looks good but you need your arms to drop down before you rotate your body otherwise the club won't drop into the slot...it will come over the top.

This is where it gets confusing to me. I am under the impression that the downswing starts from the ground up. When someone says you need to drop the arms down before you rotate, isn't that suggesting that you are starting down from the top first? I am rotating my hips first and letting that rotation drop the arms. Is this wrong?

No, you are correct. Actually the hips move laterally then turn and the lateral movement causes the arms/hands to drop

Monte is right. First move is transfer your weight to your left left then begin turn with the hips. The arms drop when you transfer the weight. If they are getting away from you it could be causing you to come over the top.

I have been trying to make my brain think of dropping my arm instead of trying to force the issue in hitting the ball. This is one of the reason I am coming over the top and at times topping or hitting it fat.[/size]

I think I finally figured it out and will try to back to range again.

I have the same problem and still in the process of fixing.
It has been one of the hardest things to try and fix for me but hopefully
I will get it eventually

Yes, it is kinda hard. It can be a hit or miss situation in terms of squaring the club face. This is why I can be handsy at times and try to close the club earlier upon downswing.

Thanks for posting this. I've been struggling with an over the top swing off and on for the last two years. This is the best video I've seen with a suggestion I can grasp and feel if I'm doing it on a swing. I've really been struggling on the feeling of how to get the club to approach the ball from the inside. The dropping the elbow in front of the body is a feeling I can grasp and hopefully replicate. I can't wait to get to the range and try it out.

+1. I did a practice swing in my garage and it felt amazing. One little note tho, I can have a bit of inconsistency on my impact if my takeaway is a little inside. So I tried to have my takeaway a little wider and more parallel to the ground when I hit the 9'o clock sequence.
