Lurker looking for swing criticism

Monday

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. Been lurking for a while but haven't really posted much. Looking for some criticism on my swing. I've been playing for about 10 months and have struggled with an inside takeaway but am working to try and fix that. These were taken with my iPhone so they aren't the greatest quality and I've no clue how to slow them down. I have V1 golf on my phone to do it but I don't know how to do it on the computer. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

10 MONTHS? Throw a party for having a pretty swing.
I'm with Grahler. Looking good! :good:

Now if you want some real criticism, BUMP this thread Friday night around 11:00 pm Eastern and go to bed. You'll wake up to find at least 3 pages that will trash you all the way down to your choice of socks. Plus, as an added bonus, you'll get 3 additional de-rail pages about movies, girlfriends, peeing behind a tree, Tiger, pizza et al ad nauseum. And finally, if someone happens to mention you do or don't swing it like Mr. Hogan, then there's at least 7 more pages of b!tch!ng and gr!p!ng about linear plane theorms, biometrics, and "5 Lessons" interpretations that will leave you calling M.I.T. for an interlingual rendition. Just remember, you asked for it. Have fun with it and welcome to Wrx.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

You have a pretty good swing over all. Compact and simple.

1. Your back is hunched over a little too much, especially when hitting irons. Try to straighten it and pull your shoulders back a little (as if you were standing at attention in the military).
2. Your swing is a little too flat. Try to work on extending your hands farther away from your torso and a little higher up on the backswing.
3. Your driver shaft looks a little too flexible. You may want to experiment with the next stiffer flex up as your swing improves.

Thanks for the responses. I really appreciate it. I agree that it seems a little flat, so I'll work on taking my hands a little higher up on the backswing. I'll also work on hunching my shoulders less, I think that being 6'5" sometimes I feel like I have to hunch just a little bit to get down to the ball, but maybe I can just tilt my spine a little more to get to the same spot. I bought the clubs used but was "fitted" for length and lie and the flex of the shafts about 9 months ago, but much has changed since then so it's probably time to go get everything rechecked. I just wanted to wait until I had a more repeatable swing so they could get a good idea of what I'll need.

You've got a good head on your shoulders with the way that you've gone about learning and analyzing your swing. I would say that your swing looks good enough to get everything rechecked.

Thanks for the replies. Can you elaborate some on me keeping my lower body more still?
If you notice, your left knee comes in towards your right. In addition, if you look from the face on perspective, your hips go out to your right. This swaying motion is taking power away because you don't have the solid base to coil upon. Drill - simply put a golf ball under the arch of your right foot while swinging.

In looking at your swing again, and this is easy to see in the iron shot from behind, you take the club back and come over the top of the ball which creates an out to in swing path. (if you want proof, look at where the divot flies...) While a lot of great players had this type of motion, none of them cast the club like you do. I would suggest toning it down a little so that you hit the ball with a slight in to out path. A great drill - take your address position w/o a club, hold your arms out (shoulder width) with the palms towards the sky, and make a swing. try to notice the plane that you are swinging on. You should also try to keep the club near your body while coming down. (video is a great means to check it)

You would also be better if your swing had a greater shoulder turn, instead of just using your arms to take the club to the top. drill - take your normal left hand grip on the club and near the hosel place your right hand with your thumb up. Swing. This drill will get a full shoulder turn and also teach a full wrist hinge.

Best of luck.

oh, and one last note... your tall. its hard to make the correct swing if your equipment is not fitted properly. (in other words, get fit)

I think a set of PING G15's would do the trick. ;)

You have a great swing for someone who just started playing golf.
For your driver:
You want more re-coil (lower body still-upper body turn)...........once you get to the top, the legs are the first to activate the downswing, then hips, shoulders and arms. THis is what activates power.
For irons:
FLat swing plane, ok but can be better. Check your divots.......chunky or smooth and where r they??? at the ball, behind the ball or after the ball. DOnt focus too much on that unless you are taking a divot behind the ball.
The PING's will help with that.
Irons are hit pure when u hit down on the ball and pinch the ball between the grass and club. This generates good spin and de-lofts the club to a certain extent which creates distance. This is why u see guys hitting 4 irons 220 yds.

dont get too technical.

Thanks for the reply. My divots are fine, I don't hit behind the ball and have no issues with spinning the ball. My 4 iron is my 215 club. I'm struggling with the driver now, but don't seem to have an issue with my irons. I agree that my swing is flat, do you have any drills to work on getting it more upright?
