Just wanted to know what the course was like, I know there is a lot of history there, just your overall experience there? When did you play there, do they use caddies?

Amazing. The history is what makes that course; the clock, the lockers, the pictures, etc. The green complex at 18 is sick.

If you are not going with a member who can fill you in on where some of the amazing shots were played, Google some of the championships held there and read up. Well worth it. You might have to try to hole it from the bunker on 18 like Bob Tway did to win the '86 PGA. 'Top 10 moments at Inverness' is a good google starting point. Pulled up a nice pdf.

And yes, they used caddies when I played there. They carried double though, the single time I played there (two caddies to a foursome).

Private too, so you need a connection to play.

If you get to play, enjoy and give us a round report!

Tom

It is a very nice Donald Ross course which is usually in superb condition. In my opinion, it gets a higher ranking than it deserves because of it's illustrious 100+ year history including multiple major championships. The most recent, not including senior events, were in 1979 (Irwin), 1986 (Tway), and 1993 (Azinger). Greg Norman finished second in 1986 and 1993, and in dramatic fashion in both cases.

The greens are small and very slick and and are not receptive to long iron approach shots, necessitated by the lengthening of the course in recent years to 7300+ yards. The architecture is not as good as many more modern courses and the scenery, while very good, is not in line with it's lofty ranking. For example, Inverness is rated higher than such courses as Arcadia Bluffs, Tullymore, Longaberger, The Grande, and many other area courses which I consider superior. If you take away the history, which many people will have a tough time doing, the course ranking drops dramatically. I have played at least 30 other public courses that I would consider superior.

That said, it's tough not to have a good time playing Inverness, even if you will likely score considerably higher than your average. When I shoot a good number there, I know I've played really well.

I've only seen the course on tv, but your comments confirm my suspicions. I was in a similar situation this summer, as my friend and I went to Milwaukee CC(ranked 57th overall in the US). Based on the rankings, it should have blown away any other course I have ever played. That just wasn't the case. While the course was really nice and well conditioned, I just didn't see 18 amazingly designed or super scenic holes.

I'm finding out that the rankings don't always tell the entire story. Alot of these course evaluators base half their ranking on how difficult yet fair a course is. I personally think it should be split into four categories...

Design 30%
Conditioning 30%
Scenery 30%
Miscellaneous (includes service, ambiance, amenities, etc.) 10%

It's a very unique course as it is such a throwback. I found it really different from anything I've played, even OHCC which is its Ross design brother. The greens are very small. First line of defense for Inverness is the rough and all the bunker lips I put my ball behind, and though the greens are less receptive they are not terribly difficults other than the size. A really different track that I enjoyed playing probably more after the fact than during.

I'm more or less with Bubb on the ranking, however it's so different than anything else I've played that it was still very cool.

I would say this is true for 90% of the courses on the Golf Digest Top 100. I have played several of them and usually feel like they are a little overrated. Its a lot of hype.

Many women choose a car by its color, real golfers look under the hood.
