Scotty Cameron Red X alernatives?

Help needed!
Hi there

I live in the UK and have recently come back into golf after an enforced 10 year lay off (back problems). I'm getting my game back into shape but have been trying to sort out a new putter - the one that I really like and want is the Scotty Cameron Red X.

However, I have just been told by the shop I went to order it from that I cannot get it custom fitted - I needed it 2 degrees flatter - and it only comes as standard 71 degrees.

I am totally devastated by this as it has taken my ages to find a putter that I like the look and feel of.

Does anyone have any suggestions of similar putter that I might try which I can get custom fitted?

Any suggestions would be very gratefully received!

I don't know if that's right about the Red X being unbendable. I have a Red X that I got fitted 2* upright with no problem at all. You might email Scotty Cameron and see what they have to say about it.

Another putter that I like, and that feels a bit like the Red X to me is the Odyssey White Steel #5. I think that head shape is available from Odyssey with a bunch of different face options if you don't like the White Steel.

You can get your putter ordered from anyone with a titleist account +/- 3 degrees. I know as I have done this before.

Have now been told by a titleist authorised dealer that the Red X only comes in a standard lie because of the 'hosel' or lack of one????? (I wanted one where the shaft goes in beside the heel)

According to the dealer, this makes it impossible to change the lie?

Quite incredibly, the custom shop at Scotty Cameron have told me that they can do it but I have to go through an authorised dealer and the dealer is saying I can't - I have to say this has got to be the most frustrating purchasing experience I have ever had - I finally find a putter I like and seem to be knocking my head against a brick wall!!!!

The old Catch-22, eh?

Well, you can definitely do it yourself, if you have the courage.

I posted a while back about changing the lie on a Red X here somewhere, and someone told me that they do it on the Tour by "stepping on the bend in the shaft."

I have a Red X and the 71* standard lie was too flat for me. I just bent it myself -- although I did not have the stones to try stepping on the shaft.

I have a lie gauge, and I flexed the shaft over my knee at the point where it bends just before it enters the clubhead. I did not use a lot of force, and I was able to bend it 2* upright so that it fits me. You can't tell by looking at the shaft that it has been bent, I just took a little of the flex out of the existing bend in the shaft.

I suspect that if you break it doing this you will be outside the warranty, but as between that and having a $200-some dollar putter I can't use, I took the risk.

There are clubfitters who are willing to bend Red X as well. I know that my guy here in Virginia was willing to do it as long as I agreed to accept any risk of breakage, etc.

In response to my post, I think Joe K said he had built himself a shaft bender for putters out of a plumbing jig designed to bend smaller gauge pipe and some rubber to protect the finish against marring.

As for the authorized dealer requirment, I think someone else mentioned finding somebody with a Titleist account. Go to the pro at your club and see if he or someone he knows has an account with Titleist.

Good luck!

God that would be frustrating. LOL Try another dealer, or see if you can get the contact info of your local titleist Rep. He should be able to also point you in the right direction. It just sounds like the people you went to are eiter:

1)To Lazy

or

2)To incompetant to get the job done.

Hope it works out for you. It's a great putter. As Thusgone said, you can also do it yourself, but if you do, be carefull and not rush it. LOL

Interesting, I'm seriously tempted to do this, but never having done it before, clearly leaves me a bit nervous. So you didn't have to heat the shaft up or anything like that to bend it?

I think this may be the only answer!

Thanks for the reply!

I think with 1 and 2 you have hit the nail on the head, I'm guessing the titleist guys for my region have stock of standard and it would be a hassle/cost them more to do anything out of the ordinary and thus I get the standard reply!

More frustratingly is that I have had the same issue with my odyssey that I have used for the last year that is way too upright but nobody around my area will dare tamper with it!

That's a lot of trouble to go to, but the Red X is a great putter. I hope they come thru for you.

To answer your question, I did not use any heat. I just applied gradual, gentle pressure one the shaft bend to make it more upright. If you can't get it done by Titleist, you might try emailing Joe Kwok here and ask his advice as to how best to go about it.

Again, best of luck.

Kevin
