face balanced and heel toe balanced question

Hi gang,

IF you have a straight back and straight thru putting stroke, should you use a face balanced putter only? ALso, how much does the balance point of the face really make when putting? I used an old acushnet bullseye and a Spalding TPM 1 for years and years and just putted wiht em using my straight back and thru stroke. I always seemed to putt really well witht hem. Neither of these putters are face balnced. I have a ray cook m1-x and a Ping Craz-e putter that I have used since learning that A face balnced putter is more suitable for my stroke. I putt great using both face balanced and heel/toe balanced putters . I really like my Spalding tpm 1 and I found a mizuno TPM 9 for 30 bucks at the local golf shop. I really like the weight/feel and look of this putter, but, I just wonder IF I should stick to the face balanced putters because of my stroke.

You should always stick with what works best for you and what is the most comfortable. Just because you have a straight back straight thru stroke, it doesn't mean you HAVE to have a face balanced. I've got a straight back straight thru and yes, I putt pretty well with a Face Balanced, but have also used a Heel toe balanced. That's why putting is such a personal thing. In other words...If it ain't broke....Don't fix it. You're putting good with what you have, don't worry about getting something new.

Good reply,

I have been reading this site for a few months or so, And when you said "don't worry about getting something new" I couldnt help but to laugh. You folks seem to have new clubs and putters every other month, Or at least daydreaming about the next and newest thing that is coming out. I honestly belive reading about all of the different new "buys" you guys have I feel a little left out. Anyhow,You have to admit, looking down at the Ping Craz-e is not a pretty sight. It rolls true though.

I agree: don't fix what ain't broke.

> I think it has more with how you release the toe through & past impact. (And, how it sets up to your eye(s.))

> I find that if I weaken my grip in both hands, I can use a face-balanced putter well. But, I strongly prefer a very strong right hand grip & tend to release the toe through impact, naturally. My primary putter allows for this natural toe release, not requiring any conscious manipulation to keep the ball on its intended line.

> if all other putting setup variables are consistent (I work long & hard on a consistent setup process & routine) then changing out the instrument becomes easy: it either works using your current setup, or it doesn't. a minor tweak to your setup COULD get you going well with a different instrument (and, you may need to have it adjusted to fit your specs.)

hope this helps calm your active thoughts.

Actually that highly depends on your stroke.

If you have the proper elbow alignments, you can do straight in straight out even with a heel shaft like phil mickelson with wonderful results.. I personally feel heel shafted putter have the best Flow .....

But if you are not sure.. Center shafted is absolutely the best choice. Even better than dbl bend

My absolute centershaft favourite is the Ping Craz-e . Just the right size, the right feel and great alignment.

Whatever works ....
