Where do people from SC go to play?

Greetings! Being new to GolfWRX and this forum, I thought I'd ask this question. Where do people who live in SC go to play if they want a golf vacation? Some friends and I are thinking about doing a getaway and going to Myrtle doesn't seem like a getaway to us. If that makes sense. I'm sure some of the members from Horry and Georgetown know what I mean.

 

Anyway, look forward to hearing any recommendations for places.

Possibly the finest course within several hundred miles of South Carolina is the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island. It would be my first choice but unfortunately my trips there have to be spaced several years apart due to the cost.

I have made several trip to Fripp Island to play golf on a somewhat more affordable scale. They have two courses on the island, the newer one is very nice but I like the older, shorter one as well. There's also S.C. National which is on the mainland just off Fripp Island. Various other options in the Bluffton/Beaufort area as well and if you stay on the mainland (i.e. not Hilton Head) the cost can be reasonable, especially off-season.

That said, for a short trip a visit to Aiken is a great getaway. Aiken Golf Club is ultra-affordable, walking-friendly and I think it's a first-rate course. Can get a little crowded and busy at weekends but for like 40 bucks or so of course is does! And if you can finagle an invite to Palmetto Golf Club right down the street (private but not super-exclusive by any means) it's worth playing repeatedly. Just an outstanding pair of course within a couple of driver-lengths of each other.

I'm not as familiar with golf in the Upstate. One other course I will mention is The Patriot over at Lake Greenwood. Very interesting, slightly quirky layout (for a newer course). And usually in awesome condition, especially their Mini-Verde greens. But not much else to do in that area other than that one course.

Fourmyle-thanks for the information. I too have played The Ocean Course and agree that cost is a huge issue. I will be in the Beaufort area and will check out some courses there. One course I'd like to play is Dataw Island. The pictures look great.

Lake Greenwood isn't to far from me so I may check out The Patriot. If you're ever up this way, check out River Falls. It's a great Gary Player course that has some great holes. It's right off I-85 in the town of Duncan.

I've actually played River Falls once about, I dunno, four or five years ago. One of the very few upstate courses I've played. It was fun, just about the right amount of up and down to provide some cool shots without feeling like mountain golf. I like that one short hole that tees off way down the hill with the green tucked back near the creek (or is it a river?).

I think Dataw Island recently redid one of their courses and is in the process of redoing their other one. The first renovation is getting very good reviews.

If you are talking about a summer getaway, many people in coastal SC head up into the mountains of NC to escape the heat and humidity.

Santee National is a pretty nice course. There are many courses in the Midlands but I'm not sure if you would consider that a Getaway vaca, you will find that most of our courses up here are around $40- $50. Old South in Bluffton is pretty nice and reasonable.
