Iron Dilema

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, it's my first post on this site. I am trying to decide on some new irons. Well they aren't new, but new for me. I currently own the G15's from ping but i'm looking at going with some blade type irons. I have an option between the MP-53 irons from Mizuno or the Taylormade Rac CB Satin Tour Issue Miura Forged. Which would you more advanced golfers suggest? Or am I better off keeping what I have. I am looking for some irons that allow me to do a little more. I am sitting around a 10 Handicap and am trying to get some irons that allow me to work the ball a little more and maybe see a little more distance. Although I don't necessarily need it since I'm hitting my 8 iron around 165.

you may lose distance coming off g15's. i've played most of ping's i series up through the i15's and those things were hot...sometimes too hot when you hit the ideal sweetspot. if you're looking for blades you should be looking at them because your priorities have moved more towards consistancy, feel, and shot shaping rather than distance. at your level there's probably no reason you couldn't move to a more traditional cb over the game improvement clubs you're coming from...and if your ball striking is consistent you could probably bypass the cb's and move to a blade without too many issues. with that said, i can't really offer any advice on which club would be best for you...but i'll say (just like most would) you should try out as many as you can and go with what works/feels best for you.

I concur with chiromickey, and you've already alluded to it in your post that you are looking to shape your shots. Players irons will give you that more than GI irons. I would go full blades if I were you. Get a used 6 iron from each of the brands you are interested in and spend time with them at the range to help you better decide.

I have to admit that I have a strong Mizuno bias, I play the 59's now and boy are they sweet. There was no due diligence done on my part before transitioning over to them from GI irons, but hey, it was love at first sight. I was fortunate enough to hit the sweet spot on my first test hit and now its too late for me. There is just no going back.

I did get to hit the 68's subsequently and experienced the same buttery feeling, although not quite as forgiving with toe/heel misses.

I now realize there is a component of romance to the whole process, so test as many as you can to see which one appeals to you. I don't want to get carried away with the dating analogy here :) . I have found that my disposition at the end of a round is more influenced by the number of sweet spot hits than by the scores, and these clubs do communicate.

What about the Nike VR pro tour combos? I also have a guy with some MP-68's that are in very good condition
I demoed the VR Pro combo's & i thought they were a really nice iron(thet didn't have the right shafts for me to try,but the head felt great).I just bought a set of the Cobra S3 Pro's & they're the softest iron that i've ever tried+ I got them @ $399/new.
IMHO, The S3 pro's feel much softer & are easier to play on an off day than the MP59's.The 59's are gone!!!!!

imho, the s3 pros are the best kept secret in golf. best all around clubs in regards to ease of use, feel, distance, and workability i own or have hit. they come as a combo set and are good for scratch golfers to mid handicappers. i own some pretty exclusive sets and from a playability standpoint, if i could only keep one set for the rest of my golfing days these would be it.

Pure blasphemy!!! Lol, you can't post stuff like that chiro.. My inner golf ho starts thinking I need to try them if they are that good, ESPECIALLY at that price ;-)

i wish i was kidding! actually, these are the irons that turned me into a jdm ho in less than a year. they're endo forged and feel and perform every bit so. if you want epons at a generic price...this is it!

I have wanted to try epon, this may be the perfect way. I love my 59s, so now I am really curious how they would compare. The only thing is it seems all I can find so far are s3s with dg s300s... I would have to swap out the shafts or hope I catch a set on the bay sometime.

I played dgs for years, and once I switched from them, I will never go back to them... I never realized how much I really didn't like them :-)

Still yet, score a set for 4 or less, new shafts and grips probably still be under or around the 700 mark... Epons with my preferred shafts and grips at that price... Sounding better and better :-). I am such a ho.
I played my 1st round with the s3 pro's today(first time playing in 2 weeks).Started off with a par, birdie, bogey,& then the unthinkable....hole-in-one on a par 3/150 yards. This is my first one ever & the first time playing with the Cobras.I counldn't believe my eyes as it went into the hole, because all that i wanted was to be on the green.I had a great round & i'm, really impressed with the control & feel of the irons-pure quality.

i definitely don't want to talk you out of the s3 pros but if you can get along with aerotech steelfibers, i may be selling my epon af-tours for not too much more than that. even if you don't like them you'd probably be able to sell the shafts and easily pay for your shaft of choice!

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
